So rebuilding as much of my 300 as I can without actually disturbing the head. Rocker shaft stripped off, all looks good apart from atrocious clearances (all at 0.6mm plus)
Minor wear on the shaft, no scoring etc. Bushes look fine in side theres no excessive wear.
The manual says to clamp the rocker shaft and put a rocker arm on and then use a dial gauge to see what the movement is laterally. Now I always understood this to be moving the rocker at right angles to the shaft, with the dial pointer on the outside of the rocker looking for clearance in the bush. And I'd do this with a splash of oil as well.
Mate insists however that it should be done dry, and I should in fact be twisting the rocker on the shaft
(not rotating) and I should have the dial gauge looking for deflections of the long end of the arm. If that makes sense. I think he's talking rubbish.
Any opinions?
