Land Train

hi,

I run a land train which was built by Deltrain over in Portugal based on a 2008 Land Rover Defender td5. Recently it's started to make a horrible whining noise. This only happens when it's in gear and driving, not when stationary and idle running. It comes and goes but really does sound nasty when it's at its worst. It doesn't affect the power of the vehicle or anything, just doesn't sound healthy. It's only covered 16k miles and has just short of 2000 hours on the hour clock.

Hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Does it make the noise if you take it out of gear whist moving?

No, it stops when I change gear.

Any shakes or judder? - Sounds like its in your drive train and not wheel bearings or engine related. When was the last time you changed the gear box and diff oils?

No juddering or anything, in all honesty it drives fine, it just sounds bad. The only oil that's been changed is the main engine oil which was probably around 5 weeks ago.

Possible propshaft UJ? - only happens under load. Well worth checking for play, and greasing them up.

When were the oil levels in the rest of the drive train last checked?

Presume this thing spends its time in low range a lot?

Surely my mechanic would check this upon inspection and let me know..? It seems to happen even when it isn't under load..

In terms of oil checks, we have had a main oil change recently (last 4/5 weeks). However, I've never had an oil analysis done..

Oil analysis ? Do you mean the mechanic checking the level in the gearbox and transferbox ? Something that should be done at every service.

No no, that gets done every 6 weeks. I have been told I can have an oil analysis on the engine oil which will tell me if there are any contaminants in the system.

For a low speed (?) high torque application, I'd be more interested in analysis of the gearbox oils - especially given the lack of technology in the gearboxes
