Arse!
my lt77 has a worn mainshaft , Ive replaced the output gear and that took some of the shunt away but not all , Ive put grease on the shaft splines before i put the gear on and that also deadened the shunt a little.
now, what i propose is this , my gear is not cross drilled , nor can i use a cross drilled gear as my box is to old , so , what if i used something else to 'fill the gaps' as it were in between the splines?
such as high temp gasket sealant or similar?
i know it wont cure a worn shaft but it may take the annoying shunt away eh?

what if i welded the gear on?:D

Well...... first, if you did that would you be able to assemble the gearbox?

And anyway, the way the GEAR-wheel and then shaft are heat treated, and the nature of the steels they are made of, may mean that a weld will not "take" properly, and if it does it will affect the hardness and strength ... and break again.

It is very difficult.

You might be able to use a MIG to build up metal, then shape it to size, but again, the hardness of the surface would end up like putty.

Nobber is just being tight - give the money to Ashcrofts
and enjoy a decent box.All the bodges are just that - bodges,I also believe that you reap what you sow.Years ago a bloke I used to drink with used to take off the speedo cable to keep his cars mileage down, then he bought a low mileage P100 pickup for work - it was worn out !
GET YER BLOODY CHEQUE BOOK OUT !

thicker oil and a pair of yer old tights in yer box, well it used to work on vauxhall 101's
So was it you that stuffed a march 1972 Bath Evening Chronicle into the sills of my neighbours E-Type before slapping on 2cwt of plastic padding filler then adding an Outspan paint job ? :D

wint me gov! although i have bin known to jam bits of fence post into busted hydrolastic supension before taking the ofending austin princess to an auction

yup , im bein tight.
fing is i can i replace my box without replacing my tranny box ?
my main box will only accept a none cross drilled input gear , so if i change my box for one that will , will i have to change my trannt box? or just the input gear?

Can't you get a normal gear an get it cross drilled. From what I remember of mine when I had it apart it was just an 'ole in the gear that allowed oil to splash up into the 'ole. An I know it's bin hardened but an half decent machine shop should have cobalt drills to mek an 'ole in the gear.

when i changed the gear i drilled the new one myself , dint make any difference though , a worn shaft's a worn shaft.
i think an mot failed disco might be the way to go withy this.

He sounds right enthusiastic about this job ...

I wonder what he did to the gear with his grinder.
