Can anyonyone tell me why diesel freelanders are superior to the petrol ones. Is it just because of the higher torque or is there more to it?

Probably asking for trouble from my TD4, but do a search for HGF (Head Gasket Failure) on the forum.

Diesels are probably a bit less thirsty as well. I am getting around 38MPG.

My local land rover specialist says the original head gasket is crap and there is a replacement that is mor like a metal shim, and once replaced will never blow again

You may or may not consider this to be a good thing, but from the Mk2 onwards the Td4 has been a BMW unit.

The orginal diesel (called various things by different people but badged as Di, XDi, XEDi, etc) was the orginal engine put in the Freelander when LR was still part of Rover. When BMW took over at LR the TD4 which was derived from the engine found in the BMW 320d was used instead. This was when the trim levels were revised (eg S, GS, ES). When Ford subsequently took over they continued to use this engine until the FL2 came out this year.

The Di is better that either of the petrol engines for reliability. The TD4 better again plus has the bonus of a timing chain ilo a belt. The TD4 also has slightly superior fuel consumption to the Di and is quieter and smoother.

Diesels are superior for fuel economy, more torque

Petrol versions are faster

Petrol engines do blow head gaskets, old red elastomeric gaskets are phasing out, new MLS gasket is the business.

Before anyone mentions overheating and head warpage of the aluminium head , same material used in the k-series as in the Td4 head. So they are both equally prone to thermal stress when over heating
