Brakes

My old 110 has no ABS or fancy stuff I had to brake very hard today from about 50 MPH. It was wet and at one point I heard the left from wheel skid so I eased off the braking slightly - there was no pull, which is making me think could it be the rear that I heard - surely if one of the fronts locked, it would pull in the opposite direction?

If it's just one of the rears locking (drums) , I'm not so concerned as it will just be due some adjustment - if it's one of the fronts, I'm concerned!

I had this, and turned out to be 2 seized front calipers.

Get someone to stand and watch you do an emergency stop and see what locks up firsts.

If it's rears then the fronts are weak/need attention.

If it's just one side then the opposite side is usually the faulty side

+1. My dad had exactly the same as flat describes. Rebuilt the calipers and all sorted.

Oh and if your fears lock before your fronts you will spin.

Ask me how I know, thank god all that happened was I ended up in a ditch and could drive out again

Oh and I took the opportunity to fit the 110front calipers and master cylinder as the front calipers have a larger swept area so are quite a bit stronger in effect

I have a dribbly swivel ball seal which leaks onto the passenger front disc and as such contaminates the pads.....so I have a brake imbalance at the moment, normal braking is fine, but heavy emergency braking, and she really pulls to one side......needless to say I will be sorting this shortly, but you may want to check your discs and pads for contamination if they are experiencing reduced efficiency.

Absolutlely.....the grease gets on the disc, which spins and the pads scrape it all off.....It has had new front callipers, discs, master cylinder and rear cylinders and shoes....

I only noticed it when I did my coils and shocks a few weeks ago......If there is space in the workshop at work tonight, I might take the wheel off and take another look.....I'll let you know what I find!

Weird, I cant see how that makes it to the disc..... do you have the cowel fitted ?

I was just thinking. If I pop down the garage, I could test the efficency on the single axle rollers by putting the transfer box into neutral?

Yes if you keep the speed down to a couple of mph as the transfer dif would need to take up the difference between front and rear axles.

Surely with the transfer box in neutral, the front and rear diff are totally disconnected, therefore there can be no imbalance?

Ah, just clicked. With the transfer box in neutral, presumably the props are still connected but the transfer box is disconnected from the gearbox.

Or use a set of rollers that spin in opposite directions, thus the axle diff is spinning but not the propshaft

Pics as attached....the swivel is leaking and it is getting on the disc....the last pic is after I have wiped my finger on the disc you can clearly see the film of grease on the disc!!

Christ that's oily rather than greasy...I guess the shield would have helped a little but that's far worse than mine ever was.

I recall at some point they swapped from oil to grease.. and a lot of folk got confused and put oil where grease should be .
