I'm about to go fight my corner regarding a badly botched fuel pump that was supposedly replaced on a car i just bought. I'm not a mechanic so i'm asking for a little advice regarding what i think is a very old pump thats been botched to hide its condition.

I have had to replace the entire fuel pump assembly as a service garage told me it was dangerous.
As well as being wrapped in duct tape, he said that a pump heat sensor had been disconnected, and a pipe was kinked.

So i am better informed when approaching the dealer, can anyone tell me exactly what the electrical plug that's between the pump and filter actually is (its on the photo in exactly the condition it was when removed from the car?

Also - as well as the duct tape, it looks to me like the entire pump and filter have been encased in some kind of mastic...i assume this is not standard or recommended?

The condition of the pump does not look like something that would have done less than 100 miles (assuming it was newly fitted as i was told)

car is a 2006 TD4 Diesel manual with 67k on the clock.
according to the service garage, the diagnostics say the rest of the car is fine...just the fuel system that had problems.

thanks
Adam

edit...looking at the photos again (i'll double check tonight) Im not sure that is an electrical connector. Why would there be electrical signals going to a fuel filter? I now wonder if something more serious might have been unconnected - such as the fuel filter!!

I have tried to search all the parts online and guides but nothing seems to explain or describe exactly what the assembly should look like!

forgive the Fleabay reference, but you can buy the pump and filter with the right connector.
if you ask the dealer for a pump / filter, ask them for the remote (under the Off Side Rear wheel arch) type.
This has been duct taped because the stupid plastic housing which holds the filter has been destroyed getting the filter out.
It may actually be a new pump and filter; just missing the plastic housing.
Fleabay advert for INFORMATION only.... i would recommend trying RimmerBros for the right parts though..

thanks for the reply...

I already have a brand new land rover fuel pump/filter assembly installed.
I am trying to understand what im seeing on the old assembly, so i can go back to the dealer who sold me the car because i am convinced the mechanic he used has not done the job correctly.

I changed my pump and filter yesterday.

Not sure which connector you mean but the pump is the top and the filter is on the bottom in your pics.
The connector (oval socket) on the the pump is for the power

If your referring to the black connector with the bluey/green tabs on it that is a FUEL line.

I am not aware of any "heat sensor"

In the wheel arch you will find the connectors. You will probably have (i did) 2 square'ish plugs and a spade connector.
1 - fuel pump
1 - fbh pump (if fitted)
1 - filter earth (spade connector)

thanks for the annotations...thats a big help.

Is there such a thing as a fuel pump heat sensor? I was told this had been disconnected, but i am not sure where it would be if it existed!

The pipework at least should be connected like this.
FuelPump-Filter.jpg

There are two electrical plugs on my Freebie, (one square and one Oval) plus the earth spade terminal - which in 99.99% cases breaks off.
The Oval connector on mine is connected to the pump, the square seems to be for a differently "connected" pump - these wires are terminated in parallel to each other, Making the pump connections ONE PLUG or THE OTHER.

Anyway... get the new plastic housing fitted and mounted....
if it IS a new pump, chances are there "could" be issues with your High Pressure Fuel Pump which is fitted on the engine itself - and have been known to fail.

But... to be certain, and for everyone to be able to offer help...

What other symptoms are you getting - without reading error codes and the likes.?

Just realised.... The Mastic stuff you are looking at is SOUND DEADENING material, used on the insides of car doors, floor, boots etc.
Or roof flashing tape!!!
I assume that they have used this because of the buzzing noise from the pump...

we had a few issues...
told it was a new pump, and had been fitted because the original was very noisy. The replacement was just as noisy so they decided it must be ok !!
12hours after purchase the connector (where you tagged Fuel Pump remote type on the photo) burst...emptying the tank whilst i was driving!

recovery truck back to garage where mechanic removed the assembly - oddly was bundled up in rags to keep it quiet, and underneath the rags was all that duct tape. No wonder he seemed reluctant to remove it. He must have known it was broken. The connector that had split was obviously very old, and reusing it had caused it break when it was reclamped then put under pressure.

The pump continued to get noisier over the next few days, sounding like an angry big wasp in the back seat. The car went in to a service garage that deals with land rovers for a full service as i wanted to be sure it was done before going any distance and decided to not mention the fuel pump and just see what unbiased opinion i got. He flagged up the problems with the filter assembly, and mentioned the ecu was full of fuel pressure error codes (no doubt down to the pipe bursting) i decided the safest course was to replace the lot with genuine land rover parts.

Its only now that i realise it felt slightly hesitant before...probably not enough fuel getting through.
Its driving nicely and quietly!

I'm just looking to get my facts accurate because i am not happy with the condition of the fuel system after the dealers mechanics had monkeyed around with the car. I want them to contribute to the extra costs i have had to incur...I've only had the car 14 days!!!

I think you should get in touch with trading standards...
there is a great post on here relating to traders and cars.... let me see if I can dig it out.

agreed... in fact, if the LR Dealers say its dangerous, i'm sure there is something where the seller has to take the car back....
try doing a search on here for trading standards..... it has been discussed many time before, and the legalities have been clearly documented - i read them last week and forget who the poster was now.

i dont really want to give it back. now the fuel issue has been sorted, the car seems fine.
the diagnostics also said the rest of it was fine, and the service mechanics found no other issues.

I'll definitely be in touch with trading standards though, as its certainly something that needs looking into.

thanks for all your help...much appreciated
