Just got a '91 Defender TDi 90 for the wife, who prefers the outdoors to the indoors. Problem is I dont have a mechanical bone in my body so was hoping someone could help me...

It seems that there is a brake stuck on although the handbrake is released (I come to this conclusion by the high amount of rev's that I need to get going in reverse or 1st). Could this happen though for anything we are not doing (for instance is the diff lock on and we dont know it, or is there something else that should be done before pulling away).

Your help appreciated.

Are you sure you're not in low range? & have you tried driving it then feeling the wheels to see if any of em are getting hot. If a brakes sticking the wheels will get real hot, real quick.

Hand brake is off. And I did check the wheels and none were hot. Diff is to the right and down in "H" there is a real metal on metal squeal from the back.

yu did - its just after my faux pas about deepender handbrakes on the wheels, I thought that I would point out that checking the wheels werent the way to check the handbrake.

yu ask me - of all peeps?

I think the handbrake drum is in the middle of the car at the back of the gearbox. It is easy to identify coz it looks like a brake drum atttached to the front of the rear propshaft.

If I am wrong - be assured - thousands of peeps will tell yu so.

Thanks, all really helpful. Can someone tell me please how to release the handbrake drum? Then I might get above 20mph next time I hit the road.
