Know this may be a dumb question but ive never seen anything over like 14.5volts before. Have had alternator light stay on for about 30seconds after starting then going off. When ever i get a volt meter on it light goes off (typical) but its reading just under 17volts and its a brand new battery. Is this right ?

Sorry if im asking should a fire be hot

Make sure you don't drive it, charging a battery at anything over 2.4V a cell will start to damage it, 15V is used as a pulsed charge for 20/30 seconds to knock sulphation off the plates, 17V will destroy the battery in short order. Bet your headlights are great!

Got the alternator off today
