Help please

I'm just the wifey of a landie owner hubby dosent use the PC so im the messenger so here goes , we have a Freelander 1.8 petrol changed the thermostat bled the water system up took it out for a run come back header tank boiling up . yet when we run car without the thermostat it runs fine any ideas what it could be please and thanks for taking the time to read this

Maybe a dodgy thermostat .. To test.. Boil the kettle.. fill a small pot with the boiling water..put said thermostat in the boiling water.. By doing that you will be able to see the thermostat open/or not.. not means it is toast and that is your problem.

Ok if this was me.. I would then confirm i had the correct thermostat for the 1.8 .. other than that i am thinking it could be an air lock in the system.. but you have stated that you did bleed it.. It might be time to call a the local radiator business .. ask a few questions there.

hes double double checked and its the correct thermostat .. its really doing his head in what it could be

Yep that was the prt type thermostat - he had bought the cream colour one and not the grey colour one which opens earlier.

As the op has boiled their one, we would hope it's the older type round metal one.

Why was the thermostat changed ? ie was there a problem before the change and that's why you changed the thermostat ? - tried the old one ?

Pressure cap working ok - not venting early ?

Getting a flow of water from the small dia pipe from the head into the header tank ?

Did he have the heater control on hot?

Did he free the jiggle valve by blowing down the small return pipe to the header tank...air can get trapped if its stuck.

it was changed cause it was starting to over heat . yes tried old one and it didn't open , pressure cap is working ok not getting a flow of water from the small pipe ..

OK , go for blowing down the small dia pipe that leads to the header tank - it "auto bleeds" the head - ish ! It has a ball bearing that can get stuck on its seat and blocks up the valve .

As per :
