My TD5 has developed some interesting electrical faults. Last week my wife said the right indicator was flashing fast, thought easy fix new bulb needed, when I tried the right indicator flashed ok until I put my foot on the brake and then just about all the lights at the back came on. Thought it might be a bad earth but when I took off the rear right hand light cluster I found a bundle of wires, scotch blocks and connectors with some half arsed try to connect a cable for the trailer. Cleaned it all up and seamed to be working ok but today brake lights are not working and when I put my foot on the brake the diff lock light in the dashboard comes on. Also the engine will not turn off even with the key out until I disconnect the positive battery connection. I have cleaned up the earth terminals behind the battery as this fix this problem before but still won't turn off.
Any ideas where to start????

Looks like a previous owner messed around with the kind of electrics that is best left alone. Engine not shutting down on the key on an electronically controlled engine sounds serious.
No matter, sierrafery and the other d2 gurus will be along shortly to help sort your problem out.
All the best...

Replaced fuse brake lights working:) thanks.

Engine still runs with ignition switch disconnected. To get the engine to turn off I disconnected the positive battery connector but i kept running??? When I tightened it back up (engine still running) the battery terminal connector twisted to the front of the car and pulled the cable going to the alternator tight and the engine switched off. Can't see under the engine cover but looks like some oil on the alternator. Engine now starts and stops as it should.

Would loose cable cause the engine not to turn off?

no, i dont understand what happened there... if it does the trick again remove the main relay(R9) from the fusebox not the battery lead
