Six months ago all dash lights came on, battery kept going flat, charged battery few times and all of a sudden the problem was gone. It ran o/k with no fault lights for about 5 months. Today battery went flat while we were out, bought new battery started o/k, then it wont charge till engine revs over 2200 and stops charging below 1500 revs, all dash lights came on. Then all dash lights went out and gauges stopped working, engine started hunting. Turned it off left for an hour, and it started, ran for a couple of miles then stopped, the battery must have gone flat and cut fuel off. Can this be simply an alternator fault or is it more involved?.

Update, left on charge till 9.30 this morning, it started no problem with no warning lights left on, even alternator light went out straight away. Just tested battery voltage at tick over, 12.50 volts so this points to a bad alternator, would the alternator drain the battery if it was not charging correctly?.

what i observed is that IF the alternator drains down the battery over night the problem is rather the diode pack than the regulator... and unfortunately i couldn't find new diode packs on ebay:(

This kit looks like the answer then, had a look to see how difficult to remove alternator and noticed oil inside on windings, cant find source of oil, but alternator is covered.

Could be from a few things... leaking from between cam carrier and head (big job to fix!), leaking from front cam seal and being blown round the side (easy fix), leaking from cam cover (replace the gasket and most importantly the gromets), leaking down the injector loom port (new loom or o-ring).

Post a photo up...
