hi there,i have got a leaky water pump on my RR 1995 2.5dt bmw.have got a new replacement with metal impelar.how easy is it to change over ? as iv been told because of the viscus fan its a hard job and you have to lock engine.i am no mechanic but am able and willing to tackle most straight forward jobs.can someone pls give step by step guide on how to do..much appreaciated.

Nooooo. Viscous is a bit of a pain. The book says you need a special tool but Wammers advocates a big spanner and a hammer. I used a mixture of both. It is a reverse thread so you unscrew clockwise.

Easy job after the fan is off. Replace the belt and the thermostat while you're at it.

And whatever you do, if it is a manual, don't try to undo the gearbox oil cooler pipes at the bottom! Not unless there really is no other option. They go into a brass connection and it'll be seized solid and the slightest bit of force causes it to shear off and then it is new rad time - as I found out to my cost a few weeks ago!

Put your general location in your profile. Someone may be near you. Download the RAVE link. It will be your prime resource - a bit like a Haynes manual on steroids.

If you've just bought it and you intend to keep it then you might want to invest in some sort of diagnostics. Nanocom Evolution is most popular, I think although some use Lynx or Hawkeye. If you're not sure if you're keeping it a long while you'll probably want to PM Datatek and get an EAS cable and software off him unless yours has been converted to coil springs.
