Chassis and Bulkhead swap...

Sadly, Ediths addiction to Oxide of Iron has now rendered her un-mot-able and SORN is calling at the end of this month.

I've bitten the bullet and bought a new bulkhead and am about to purchase a new chassis.

Any pointers as to how best go about the swap over - I guess it's a case of undoing everything, cleaning it up and transferring it over with new fixings and seals, although with two chassis and a huge pile of bits, I'll not be popular, so I'd ideally be looking at doing it as easily and compactly as possible.

At what point does the engine come out and all the oily bits go over (if there is an ultimate best point) and at what point do the axles and wheels move over? Hopefully not wanting to strip down completely and then build up on new chassis completely..

Any advice at all appreciated.
 
Kinnell there's a question!!!!! I've never done it but I reckon I'd do it like this :-

1. Put newly painted bulkhead on new chassis.
2. Take the body work off the old chassis and take it somewhere for respray. Unless your doing it yourself then put it in the spare bedroom and paint it.
3. Take all running gear off old chassis clean paint and bung it on the new chassis. Doing brake lines etc.
4. Swap engine and transmission over.
5 Do wiring.
6. Put the bodywork on the new chassis.
7. Have a cup of tea and a biscuit.
But there's more than one way to kill a cat.
 
more or less how i done mine. had to rebuild the tub though as it had corroded badly.
it took 6 months , 350 hours and thousands of pounds but it was badly corroded and i replaced the engine.

**** sake , right then , il give you the quick and short version.

bought a **** 90 off e bay , was told it needed out riggers , went to scotland to collect , turned out it needed a chassis.
drove it home.
stripped it , built it onto a new chassis , new bulkhead ,3 new series doors , new sill bars ,almost virtually new military door tops , 3 new anti burst locks , new exhaust , decent re-con 19j engine , new floors ,re-built tub , new tranny tunnel and diaphram , new clocks (oil temp , pressure , volts) new seat box , disc brakes back and front (300 tdi axles) and new braking system (pipes etc) , new suspension , new steering (ball joints , track rod things and stuff , new a frame ball joint , **** loads of paint (red oxide primer , hammerite for the axles and everything else underneath , **** loads of tekaloid coach painting enamel and acid 8 etching primer , hamilton brushes) not to mention the nuts and bolts , brackets , under floor cross members and every thing else it takes to build a landrover.
thats just the tip of the iceberg.
6 months , id say 350 hours on the drive and near the same finding out how to put it all together and around 3.5 k later and ive got my self a very solid little land rover.
needs a few bits and bobs to complete but its nearly there.

gotta be honest if you doin it to make money then forget it cos you won't , mine aint worth anywhere near what it cost , but, i loved every minuit of the build and i ended up livin on me own , thats no bad thing cos i can now wash engine parts in me bath !!! could'nt do that before !!!!
and forget sticken to budgets cos you won't , not even close !!!

ive never washed anything sept my arse in the bath but your right , you will lose money on a landy rebuild but , if you do it properly you will have a land rover that you know i nside out and one thats solid with out any doubt , you woul;d pay a lot of money if you wanted to buy that kind of guarantee.
 
Oi! you never told em about the tent we made while grinding the old chassis in the rain....horizontal rain! I'd never had an electric shock before:D
