Hi all,

I am currently ordering stuff for my 90 rebuild and have decided that funds allowing I would like a refurbed disco transfer box.

I read in a thread a while ago that JM doesn't think Ashcroft put much effort into their reconditioning nowadays.

Are there any other places that people can recommend that I can swap my 1.4 for a refurbished 1.2?

Synchro gearboxes
Reconditioned Gearboxes - Gearbox Rebuilds - Rebuilt Gearboxes
They are on Facebook heard some good reviews from them lately

My local 'Major' land rover specialists won't touch Ashcroft anymore.
I can recommend syncro gearboxs,
He's on here called "Shabs"
Or Bristol transmissions think their called can't remember off hand,

why the backlash with ashcroft? have they let their standards slip, too expensive, etc?

Loads of problems with gearbox's aparently and their after purchase customer service/care is crap.
I know some major teams entering King of valleys and other events won't even speek to them no more.

Their lockers are **** hot though.
But there promise on the website saying " 2280 Ashcroft Air lockers sold to 12/12/13 with zero failures to date!" isn't true.
Just the few people I know have had 2 Ashcroft lockers break but they do get heavy abuse at events.

I had an issue way back when with Ashcroft. Problem was I never spoke to Ian or Dave as they were on holiday and got a big fuxc yooou when my gearbox went tits up after 13 months and not offered the fix at cost or free dependant on their findings I should have been entitled to. That said so far the other items I have had since have been good and you can rock up there and pick up parts. I suspect the gearboxes and tranny boxes are built off site by hooligans. Tis true the lockers have failed but have always been no question replacement unless proven to be abused (by this I mean seriously abused at international comps) on huge 40 inch tyres.

Ashcroft are ok I'm not as trusting as I once was tho.

Its a business and they want to make money as we all do. Unfortunatly poor customer service or bad experiences breaks peoples aliances and go elsewhere.

Ref winch challenge people breaking lockers. Some of those guys are breaking 35 spline dana's there comes a point where 24 spline, inch and a wee bit just isn't man enough to take LS engines and 38 inch tyres.

Got a bigger engine than an LS sat here

Highlighted the important part of that sentance.

Weight for serious offroad driving/racing is so bad ask Owl the effort he has gone to to shread weight is because a lighter car works. Unsprung weight I'm trembling at having a salisbury rear! Might see if I can press in a tube a Rover axle like the warriors used to do if it proves to be a nightmare and too heavy.

Its slowly moving towards a road biased vehicle.......been doing up the series one so haven't had time to drop it into a vehicle yet.

Got a gearbox etc with it and its a runner, just add fuel and electricity

Theres not a huge weight difference between a sals and standard rover axle is there ? about 40kg from memory ?
