Hi All,

I know I could have put this in the FL section, but I wanted everyone's opinions rather than just FL owners.

So as we are saving to move house we have decided to get rid of my partners RenaultSport Megane which is on finance.

She has decided she won't swap it for another car as it will seem crap (fair point, mine does), so she wants a Freelander as it is totally different.

If we have a £3-4kish budget, would we get a decent one? Is it worth doing or are we going to have a lot of trouble with it?

Which models are worth looking at? She likes the ones with extra lights on the bumper (XEi?).

Ta

Every vehicle gives hassle. They all have moving parts which break.

Put this way though give me a freelander to fix any day rather than some French vehicle

3-4K will can get you something like mine around 140K miles

TD4's tend to be favourite and after 2000MY (I think) the gearing ratio was changed to take stress off the VCU. I'd look at FL1's between 2004 to 2006.

There is plenty of expertise in the FL section though ;)

Ok, thanks.

That is true, I guess I would be able to do most work myself. The Megane will be the last French car I buy tbh, if my partner connects her phone the stereo freezes and then flattens the battery overnight...

The FL section might be the way to go, just thought more people would see this here.

Had a look at a few, found a 2004 td4 sport with 99k miles for £3500, so will go and look at it soon.

Are the 1.8s bad? They are very cheap with low mileage.

Anyone want a 2010 black RS Megane?!

Yes, the K-series engine is pretty bad for eating head gaskets, any size of K-series... even the 1.1 litre Metro ones.

I would love someone to prove the theory wrong though!

Don't buy an early petrol engined (K-series) one! Mind you, with your budget you'll avoid them anyway. ;)

they are better than the td4 powerwise and can be more reliable if looked after.

bad maintenance and lack of servicing are the major issues with the k ;)

Actually I have 1 good point. Being a freelander owner its been a great vehicle to learn on. How things work, how to fix them ect... Makes me actually appreciate how a car works and not to abuse it.

It worries me not on your hypothesis.

If yu wish to delude yourself, I care not a fig, but it is well documented that the K series Freelanders were poorly designed, poorly executed and poorly built.

Maintenance is of no more a significant factor than any other vehicle, unless you are suggesting that the likely owner if a K series freelander is such a moronic excuse for a human being that they are much more likely to curtail the maintenance than the owner of any other vehicle.

I refer you to the dog and lemon guide 2010 on the Freelander .
