2000tdi engine

Just a very basic question. I'm thinking of getting rid of my freelander and getting a defender. From reading the posts the 2lt Tdi seems to thought of as the best engine. My question is. Is it the same engine as in my Td4 which is basically a bmw or if not what is it.

a 200tdi is NOT the same as a TD4, however, it is a very, very good engine. I would strongly recommend either the 200tdi or 300tdi in a defender, simple to work on yourself and will drink anything, so, you can run it on vege oil if you want

The 2000tdi was a special build to power Land Rovers sadly abandoned off road cargo train project.

Thanks for the info. What sort of mileage could I expect from the 200 and 300? I had series11s and lightweights years ago but have no knowledge of later models.

Depends what vehicle, auto or manual, tyres etc.
With my 300tdi auto Discovery I am getting 27-35mpg, sometimes less around town. I have just bought a 200tdi manual Discovery and it has a slightly better mpg, not sure by how much.
If your main concerned is about budget take into consideration cost of parts, labour and purchase price. Most vehicles with 300tdi and 200tdi will need a far amount of work doing to them by now.

What to buy then? That is the question. Got to exchange the freelander so going to end up playing dealer prices. Pity cause I actually like the freelander but it's struggling on the mud and I'm mucking it up doing what I'm doing. Had three little pigs in it yesterday.

Don't let the AHVLA find out either it's pretty certainly illegal.

When I was young the farmers near me transported pigs in P4 Rovers. Occasionally an Austin A50 Cambridge was pressed into service, but mostly Rovers. The pigs seemed fairly happy about it as I remember.

It certainly isn't illegal to transport them in a freelander as long as the movement licence is in place with the vehicles registration and the start and end times of the journey. On the whole the pigs, which are six weeks old and not much bigger than a jack Russell terrier quite enjoyed the experience.

Mine doesn't look in the for sale section. Up together and ready to off road.

Yeah. Looked at it earlier and would do me a treat but have the freelander to get rid of first if I decide to change. Don't think you'll have too much trouble selling it.
