Service - what's needed?

My dad has a '98 4.0 SE. Had the car 10 years and it's been serviced every year by the land rover main dealer. It's only done 65k, costs about £300 to service but looking at the invoice they only change the oil, filter and air filter.

Considering servicing it myself. What will a P38 of this age and mileage need? Obviously engine oil and filter, but what about automatic oil and filter, diff oils etc?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Auto box should be done very 24 to 30K miles, I would recomend doing the diffs, transfer box and the UJ's before they too fail. None of it difficult, all the oils and quantities are in RAVE with the service schedule.

I'd also recommend changing the air, oil, pollen and fuel filters (all easy). Island4x4 do a reasonably priced OEM kit

Thanks for the reply, do you think the auto gearbox filter should be changed? Don't mind doing the oil but not sure about the filter.

Yes, the filter should certainly be changed.

You just drop the gearbox sump and the filter is there. Very simple job.
If the dealer has only done what you've said then I'd be wondering about anti-freeze and brake fluid.

I'd be more worried about the UJs! Get some grease in them ASAP.

Grease gun £14 at Toolstation: Toolstation > Automotive > Mechanics Tools > Grease Gun

Grease cartridge £3: Toolstation > Automotive > Mechanics Tools > Lithium Grease

UJ's have been greased every year, only does about 2,500 miles a year. Brake fluid changed couple of years ago as needed a new brake pipe for mot.

Don't think the coolant has been changed for a few years. Just been pricing up the parts and oil, about £250, not including replacing the uj's. Can do most of the jobs but would probably get a garage to change auto box filter and oil.

Autobox filter & oil is a piece of cake if you have a set of TORX bits. Garages cannot be trusted to do this in my experience.
