sounds worst than first thought

ok, so the story so far, after returning from a 500 mile round trip, we picked up a new noise, on our return I took it to the local LR garage who said that it looked like front ns brake was binding, and quoted £320, I bought it home, and after a few members here said "do it yourself" I did, quick look yesterday, sliders on calliper were stuck, free'd it all up, took for spin, noise still there.

now guy across road races bangers and is a bit of mechanic, so he came out in it with me, he's saying deffo not binding brakes, as noise does not change when applying brakes, he doubts its wheel bearing as again noise does not change when driving and steering or wobbling steering wheel left to right,

now of course Im unsure on taking it back to the LR garage in case they just start taking it apart and then quoting one bit after another to replace,

so how do I go about finding the fault?
could it be propshaft related?
dont think its the vcu as its deffo noise around engine-front ns wheel rather than middle

or do I follow my own advice, and turn the radio up another notch and not worry until it goes bang

Did you do tbe rear brakes also? And did you check the calipers and pistons moved freely if not it could still be that?
Is it auditable enough to get on youtube?

Also prob not this but on really wetdays mine with having larger chuncky tyres makes an un godly noise from spray back itdid get me pulling over several times before i realised what it was..

This may or may not help.
Ours makes a slight noise from the front, has done for months. Daft as it may be I had both rear bearings done 2 weeks ago and there's only a very slight noise from the front now!
After poking around a bit I have put it down to the aircon pulley which I replaced last summer with a cheap part. Before it was replaced it made a noise just like binding brakes, its a pain to swap as it runs off a small drive belt behind the main auxiliary belt, and if your going to do it get the o.e part not a cheap one like I did.

I checked the calliper was moving ok, but didn't check the piston was moving, think I'd better try again tomorrow

If you wanted to rule out the prop shaft etc it only takes 30 mins to remove it. And that is including having a cuppa.
Noises can be a bugger to hear where they are coming from as they can travel through the structure of the vehicle before becoming audible especially when you are driving.

Wheel bearing can drone before play can be detected and the noise doesn't always alter I the early stages when steering.

Without hearing the noise it I'd be loathe to guess where or what it is

update;

removed the calliper again and for the life of me, could not get the piston to move, and yup Ive done this before on 2wd and bikes, so put all back together, mole grips on pipe and took car around the block, no noise, so have just picked up (in my work van) the calliper from my mate, as he owned this freebie before me, he had already replaced the drivers side one the day before I bought it many months ago
so at least I now have matching callipers,lol, as these are from a td4
I'll give it a go at fitting tomorrow, weather permitting
