I've just spent the last few days after work building the loom for my TD5 dash on a 300TDi install. So today was installation day. I started with the most fiddly bit and pulled through a ground, ignition and data wire for the transducer. I removed the old dash and speedo cable etc then installed the transducer, connected the cable and connected up the permanent live, side light, ignition live, ground, water temp, fuel level and transducer wires as a start.

All the gauges work but the speedo does not move. I swapped it for another one as I had two and that didn't work either. I still had the central plate removed so unconnected the transducer.

If I spin the square shaft I can do 70mph whilst stationary so the wiring is working! I know that the drive to the speedo sender bit of the transfer box should work because the mechanical speedo worked. The square shaft is the same size as the speedo cable so it should work. I've tried removing it and re-installing it 3 times but nothing.

Should there be something in between the transducer and the transfer box? It does not seem totally solid in it's location, is this normal? How do you make sure it is located correctly?

I just fitted mine in as a straight swap for the cable, nothing in between.

I haven't hooked my speedo up yet but I know it works as the sat nav senses it and displays the speed correctly. (and before anyone says anything the sat nav doesn't work without the transducer).

I don't know how fast the cable drive spins but 70mph seems a bit quick just by spinning with your fingers.

Is it possible that something is earthing when you fit the transducer?

No, the wiring is neat and exact... The tranducer clicks as you move so it looks like the square shaft isn't locating correctly or trying to go in off straight....

Well done. I've been thinking about doing this mod, but :nopics:

There are a lot of bits and pieces on the internet. I am happy to do a complete step by step guide if people feel it is wanted. I should be able to reset the mileage on TD5 gauges to anything too so will be able to match the actual mileage....

When fitting the transducer to certain tboxes the speedo drive gear square hole can vary
For some the hole is too big and the square peg on the transducer can spin within the gear drive
Wonder if that is what's going on with yours
