wow, the gear was good tonight wunt it hicks throwing bricks and ****...
...i just fitted a new sony headunit to my 90 and their pretty much standard if you have one in there allready. the only thing which may be a problem is the harness/wiring. but you can sort this out later as you dont get the bits when you buy the headunit anyway.
does she have an ipod or similar? you can get a sony CD with aux input for around £50. you use a 2way 3.5mm jack plug to connect the ipod/mp3 to the headunit and run it through the car! simple and you get so much more music and less hassle than CD's.

Apparently all new radios have an iso attachment. Have found a site that sells adapters to connect an iso to land rover wiring. The ones they sell says its compatible for defenders from 1979 onwards, any idea if that would be ok for a 1986 90 too? or is the wiring different? thanks

I'd contact them if I wuz you to check, there's so many model variations. Also, does said 90 already have or has it had any kind of ICE fitted in the past? If not you might find there ain't no wiring there to start with. There certainly wasn't anything ready & waiting in my 91' Defender, that said CD players are a piece o' pee to fit.

I work down at Halfords on the audio bit. The wiring adaptor you need is an Autoleads PC2-14-4 if it's the standard Landrover wiring. Chances are a Landrover of 1986 vintage will have been butchered before now. I know mine was...

If your wiring block looks like this then the lead I mentioned is the right one. You will be able to basically plug and play any aftermarket stereo. They are about £14 from us down at Halfords but cheaper probably on Ebay or somewhere.
This second link is what a standard ISO fitment looks like so maybe yours has already been changed to standard.

Either way, if you're unsure then take a few snaps of the wiring you have and message me them, and I'll try and figure it out for you. Although like Marcus says, it may not have anything in there at all!

Don't buy a Radio/cd off eBay I bought one
and had it fitted by someone else as when
I looked at all the wires they did not seem
to fit anywhere it was fitted but have had
some issues like cannot find the CD when
you press the Aux button its intermittent
also the RDS picks local traffic reports for
the 1st 5 seconds then it goes back to
the original programme this one had memory
card slot and a USB connection never been
able to get the ipod to work nice looking
radio but a load of sh*t..............
Maybe I will be down to halfords to buy and
get fitted with a new radio/cd

what a bammy statement.. just cos you had bad luck with one radio bought on e bay does not mean that all radios sold on e bay will be faulty.

I reckon there are some bargains to be had on ebay if you know what you're looking for. I've bought a few CD players off there and they've been ok. There was one though that had some dodgy wiring and if I'd tried to install it straight away it would have blown up! So you've gotta be careful.
As for goin' down to Halfords, well... as someone on the inside, I can say that there are some decent headunits avaliable at ok prices. You really can pick up a decent MP3 headunit with fitting for about £80.
Personally though I like my bargains so I'd shop around. Halfords is convenient but rarely the cheapest. You're paying for the convenience of a drive in - drive out service that most people with any basic skills don't actually need. Fitting a CD player into most cars is easy enough but on defenders etc it should be a piece of **** unless the wiring's been butchered.
If you wanna real bargain with convenience, keep checking back at the big stores like Halfords cos there are always display units being changed and sold off. You'll get the box and the warranty, just at a cheaper price. There's usually some decent deals on fitting them too. I got a decent Sony headunit with box etc the other week for £32.
I suppose it all depends on if you wanna pay for the convenience and the safety net of an in-store warranty.

Right, had a look at the wiring....
4 parts!?!
1. The main connector with 6 wires:white, grey, black, blue, red and green (see attached pic)
2. Three thicker wires taped together (black, red and green) only the black wire was attached to the radio by a plastic plug thing and didnt seem to affect the radio's function when removed (earth??)
3. One thick black wire with a round connection (aerial??)
4. A black connector with 6 small circular holes, attached to 6 wires. NOT attached to the current radio
The attached pictures show the main connector and radio wires.
Any ideas on where to go from here would be very very much appreciated!
