Just wondered, as a TD5 passed me at lunchtime, and I have a 5 cyl Vovlo, and there are loads of 5 cyl Audis. I remember Audi introduced a 5 cyl years ago. Is the TD5 related to this? It would seem sensible.

not AFAIK, the TD5 was in design before BMW took over, but finished/launched under BMW giving rise to the misconception that it is a BMW unit.

The Td5 Diesel engine

think its a trend to make deisels smoother/more drivable

That's a good article, thanks. Lots of good features, spoiled (from what I read here) by over fussy electronics. I wonder has anyone tried running it with a mechanical/high pressure pump and lower pressure injectors?

My weekend car is an Audi ur quattro, 5-pot turbo. The idea of the 5 cylinder was that it was had the efficiency of a 4 cylinder but maintained the smoothness and was more refined, similar to a 6 cylinder.

I absolutely adore the distinct "warble" the engine and exhaust produces. I also previously had a Volvo C70 Coupe with a T5 (turbo 5 cylinder), which was also a superb engine.

Volvo used the 5 cylinder Audi engine which was used in the A4 and 6's anyway and also used in the VW transporter.

Not linked to the TD5 though, that was Land Rover designed engine done partially under BMW ownership.

The volvo certainly is smooth. Sadly they decided to fill the bl*&dy thing with computers - there's even one for the dash. Fantastic when new, but bad news for banger drivers like me!

The 5 pot engine is smoother than a 4, due to the way the crank works. On a 4 pot motor it wobbles around a lot due to the firing angles or something like that

very true on a 4 pot theres a power stroke every 180 degrees lasting 180 degrees on a 5 pot a power stroke every 144 degrees lasting 180 degrees ,on a v8 every 90 degrees etc
