What is the black box under the passenger seat in my D2?

Hmm...if the Sony unit you've got is already amplified, I'm sure I've read somewhere, probably on here, that it could be problematical. Can't recall exactly, but the plugs behind the head unit may be different, there may be feedback or interference between the amp and the head unit and the steering wheel controls may well not work.

Sorry, that all sounds a bit negative, and it's only second hand information I'm regurgitating so it may not be right, but I thought I'd give a heads-up. :)

Hi Will, it'll be the power amp if you've got a Harman Kardon system plus the EATS (Electronic Auto Transmission) ecu

There were three types of ICE installed in the Disco 2, depending on version; the lo-line which was just a head unit with a tape player, the Hi-line which used the Alpine R990 headunit with a six CD auto-changer under the driver's seat and a power amplifier under the passenger's seat or the Harman Kardon system which also incorporated a sat-nav.

The 2004 Landmark, the same version as my own was fitted with the Hi-line ICE system, not the HK as standard.

That is a known difficulty with both the Hi-line and HK systems, the use of an external power amplifier. Unless the replacement head unit has a left and right low level (non-amplified) outputs then connecting it straight to the power amplifier will over-drive the amp causing severe distortion. One way I can think of to correct the problem would be to introduce a pair (for two channel stereo) of custom built attenuators, but without knowing the various figures for outputs, impedances and required input levels, I couldn't possibly begin to design them.

You could of course wire some of the speakers; front and back, left and right without using the power amplifier.

There are quite a few threads on the forum about this problem.

Well here is the installation guide. Now I don't know, but it looks like both the front and rear speaker are supposed to pass through a power amplifier, soooo we're ok? Or am I reading it wrong? I assume the HiLine power amp handles both front and rear?

Hi Will

It looks like you do have low level outputs from your head unit which will probably work OK into the Disco power amp.

Looking at the diagrams in RAVE, all the speakers are driven from the power amp; the mid range ones in the doors, the tweeters and the bass units in the tailgate.

You'll have to pick up the "system enable" wiring which provides the "on" signal to the amp and also the power supplies to the two aerial amplifiers, one for FM and the other for MW above the rear side windows.

I've attached the plug wiring arrangement for the R990 head unit so you should be able to work it all out from that.

Great! Thanks! That doesn't mean anything to me at the moment but I will edjumacate myself ahead of time. This will doubtless make more sense to Diesel Do, who will be helping. After we get the gearbox in. Hopefully. Maybe.

I hope it's all up and running in time for next weekend Will! otherwise you will have to just listen carefully to my radio? I've got a bluetooth speaker - maybe you can drive close enough to pick up my stuff?
