through the dip stick if you have one, or a plug in the front of box sump

Ok...so am on a mac...downloaded the above to find files empty...so went to the other link suggested on another thread........

Land Rover Workshop Manuals > Range Rover P38 > 44 - AUTOMATIC GEARBOX - ZF AUTO > DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION > AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - DESCRIPTION > Page 750

Filler/level plus ...item 18

We drained out more than the mere 3 litres we were able to get back in........suggestions?

RR is on the level.....

P
presume your checking level with engine running box in neutral, and yes its level plug

Not started it yet.......its up on axle stands......had done the diffs too, ok to start up on the stands? Can someone guide us through exact sequence of doing this?

P

you wont be able to get all the oil in till its running in neutral ,run through the gears till you feel them take with foot on brake then back to neutral and recheck

You should be able to fill at least same amount as drained.
Since this is first time may I recommend: When you think you are done go for a short drive and let all cool then check the level again on flat surface.
As already said: Start engine, go into all gears letting them engage, then into Park engine running check level and top up if needed - job done.

Out of interest was there any metal filings on the magnet?
Did you stick in a bit of Lucas Stops Slip and which ATF fluid did you use?

Really should have RAVE handy when performing tasks not 100% sure of, sensitive beasts they are:)

Refill
7. Refill gearbox to bottom of filler/level plug hole
with correct grade of fluid.
8. Ensure gear lever in the ’P’ position, start engine
and move selector lever through all gear
positions and back to ’P’ position.
9. With the engine idling, continue filling gearbox
until a small thread of fluid runs from filler/level
orifice.
10. Refit filler/level plug using a new sealing washer
and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lbf.ft).
11. Lower vehicle.

If you're on a Mac you will need the PDF version

once you have this, use Calibre and convert the PDF file into .mobi and upload to your kindle then you will have RAVE on your phone iPad etc etc :D
