For something thats going to be really roughed around, off-roaded and stuck into deep puddles and everything, a 300tdi or even a 200tdi would probably be best as its literally just the most basic form you can get of a turbo diesel engine.
For something that I was using every day to get around in, tow stuff and generally use for anything else as well as some fun off-roading it would have to be a TD5.
Once they are tuned a little with a de-cat, center box replaced and maybe a bigger intercooler and then re-mapped, they are brilliant!
They are good on fuel too. Mine even with all the gear on it and 33x12.5 muds still manages 30-33mpg and even does 25-27 while towing for journeys with the track-car.
If you get a bad one, it'll break your heart but I've had no problems whatsoever with the engine so far other than the little non-return line going into the fuel filter getting blocked.
Gearbox **** itself alright but that happens any Defender and can't blame it considering probably at least half the 15K I've done since the start of the year has been towing work with either cars or farm stuff.
Electrics aren't that delicate either really if your worried about them. Few problems like the oil being soaked up through the loom and things but in terms of the main reason people shying away from them in fear of water getting into the ECU. A friend has a TD5 trayback and he got stuck one day in a pond with water upto the tops of the seatboxes and it still had no problem afterwards. Obviously I wouldn't be doing it every day but I wouldn't let it be a reason to stop you buying one!

GINGE not good fella, the wife and kids thought it would be fun to rub some into the groin area of my trouser before leaving for work - spent the whole day in agony and returned home red raw. Two years later they owned up!!
Back to the thread....Has anyone noticed how expensive the TDI is now. I don't think it will be too long before TDIs are more expensive than the TD5.
