Land Rover Discovery family set to grow | Auto Express


Not too sure on the rebrand to be honest.

One of my customers past week is high up at the halewood factory and said there is a new Discovery Sport being built and I guess this is it. Apparently the Land Rover name is being dropped and instead 3 distinct lines of vehicles. Discovery, Range Rover and Defender. I quizzed him on the new defender and all he said is that it's not the DC100, and that enthusiasts will not be happy.

I quite like it too, will be similar to the Evoque but not badged a Range Rover and therefore cheaper, although why they seem to want to badge it a Disco is beyond me, as I doubt it will be the same type of car, and too similar to the Freelander

I wouldn't believe anything AE comes up with as exclusives, especially the images they get the work experience boy to do.

I think dropping the Land Rover name is a big mistake. Shame about the DC100, I liked that if it's what I think it was- a bit like a Skoda Yeti on steroids. Sadly due to all our safety nazis I don't think we will never get anything like a Defender again. Probably will never get a 3 door fun Freelander type thing either, which is a shame as nobody seems to make anything like this unless Suzuki still make their 3 door Vitara?

The phrase "...As our exclusive image shows..." gives the slight suggestion they've made it all up and they're talking crap. They got someone to knock up a photo image and filled a page in the mag. This has been going on for years. Look at the current vehicles and shape that design round a smaller vehicle and call it a scoop. Telling a car mag what they're up to is one thing but passing over a photo... LR have their own marketing dept which spreads the gospel world wide. they're you tube accounts are some of the best edited video's around for cars. Why would they ask a second rate mag for help they they've got us?

If they do drop the Freelander name it will be because the tratterers have abused it to death.

The DC100 was based on the T5 platform, meaning it shared the same chassis at the LR3/4 and the RRS up to 12MY. My guess would be they scrapped it as they aren't using the T5 in any new products and are moving away from it. Expect the new Def to be on a newer design chassis, one maybe already in use. Then it would be cheaper to use one of the powertrain setups already in use as well.

Looks to me like a cross between a Disco and the latest Jeep Cherokee. The Yanks already reckon the Evoque is a rip off of their Ford Explorer, bloody cheek !! If this supposed rendering is factual (which I very much doubt) then I can just hear the Americans saying the same, it's a rip off of the Cherokee.
I liked the DC100 concept - not as a replacement for the Defender, but as a vehicle in it's own right. Maybe as an entry level Land Rover. Especially the sportier 2 seater version. I reckon they would sell really well - maybe not to current Landy owners, but to people new to the brand who don't want/can't afford a Range Rover and who don't need the capacity of a Disco or the agricultural feel of the Defender.l think there is a place in Land Rover's line up for a dedicated Sports Utility Vehicle aimed solely at having fun rather than being a mountain climbing all conquering 4x4 hero.
It should still have 4x4 capability, but more like the Audi Quattro type ........rally style rather than mudplugging. I reckon it would be a winner.

Having had another customer today who is a landrover employee, he told me about the replacement for the freelander and I said yes the Discovery sport . He said no there is 2 new vehicles to be launched, the Discovery Sport and a 7 Seat freelander replacement????

IF they are developing a 7seater freelander to sit under the discovery during the rebranding of the model ranges, then it will be a long wheel based version. The upside to monocoque's.
