Took the leather gaiters off mine this morning, looks like I shall have to replace the swivel balls, might as well go the whole way and replace all the seals while im at it so a kit shall be ordered :)

got back from jsf 4x4 today with new axle oil seal and swivel half shaft bearing.

I didn't fancy splitting old half shaft bearing race but didn't have to as new bearing sat on old race perfectly.

ball bolted up with new nuts and bolts:

thrust washer put in railko bearing after soaking in ep90 all day, new king pin installed.
I had to use all the shims to get a nice 10lb preload pull;

old distance piece removed, I found a bit of heat, a few chaps and the pipe grips did the job nicely:

with stub bolted back on I regressed hub bearings, fitted a new oil seal to back of hub (old hub seal was felt set in metal that ran over distance piece, new one is a nice oil seal similar to axle casing..fingers crossed no leaks!

tomorrow I will rebuild freewheeling hub and the new Mintex brake set with Lucas slave cylinder.

ps the chaps at JSF in Norwich were very helpful!

what James and Thor said about new race plagued my mind so as a matter of course I removed half shaft again today to replace inner bearing race.

the old ones are on tight!!!

Collar, bearing race then half shaft collar:

Cut a groove in bearing race with grinder then applied heat to get them off:

Cleaned shaft, but of oil then heated the be-Jesus out of new race, slid on nicely using thick gloves, now set fast as it cooled:

Have to order a new oil collar tomorrow, 90217398 about a tenner each!!

in the meantime I degreased and painted brake back plate and hub:

i would order an axle end oil seal, distance piece, distance piece/hub oil seal, swivel halfshaft bearing plus a new oil seal runner collar for half shaft.

while its apart and for the relatively small cost it saves you going in again :)

Do they come in the kit you ordered or do i have to get them seperate? Thinking of getting the same kit as it seems to be good from your photos

you don't get them in the kit I'm afraid.
the distance piece and it's oil seal, the axle oil seal, half shaft bearing and half shaft seal collar need to be ordered separately!

parts:
Axle oil seal - 217400
Half shaft Collar - 90217398
Half shaft bearing - 244150
Distance piece - 59968
Hub (distance piece) oil seal - RTC3510

all suitable for my 88" 1978, good up to 1980 I think these part numbers.

well that was harder than I thought!!

half shaft collar on, I dinged the half shaft a bit but it's just in the axle doing nothing so not too bothered;

put hub assembly back on and got new slave cylinder in:

started on other side, really good condition apart from 2 small imperfections/rust spots.

I'll change complete for piece of mind though:

finished at last, my knees ache like a bugga!

had to go to local landy repair man and rifle through is draws for a brake shoe spring, the bottom spring was worn/stretchy which meant the trailing shoe fell out backwards and jammed the wheel in reverse.

both axles filled with EP90, gearbox/tranny/overdrive to fill tomorrow.

then it's MOT time for the old girl, first time in 7 years!

I've just read this thread through, and thanks for taking the time to take pictures and do the write up, very helpful indeed. Any thoughts on the quality of the Britpart kit yet?

so far so good, no complaints with the Britpart kit although I've only done 3 miles to the MOT and back ;0)

Haha, ok. Pass I hope! There is report of a bad batch of balls, being a bit too small so never getting a good seal but sounds like this doesnt apply to you. Look forward to any further updates or guides you might put together.
