I have a Disco 200tdi that I bought for towing the caravan. The Disco does struggle when it comes to hills and overtaking on the motorway but overall it's not too bad.

However I'm thinking of getting a Disco 2 due to the extra torque but I know it's not too significant a difference.

Is the difference between the TD5 and 200tdi very notiecable when towing?

Cheers

Didn't realise we were dating but happy to give an introduction if you want.
Quite a bit actually, cars and caravans doing 50mph, lorries at 56mph and I tend to travel between 65 and 70

We're not, I'm not that easy but it is considered polite.

A TD5 has a lot more potential for tuning than a Tdi but I'd suggest 70 is more than fast enough towing a pikey wagon

Now now
I was gonna say 70 is too fast to tow but having thought about it at least we wont be stuck behind it. I only drive my disco2 at 60_65 to keep the fuel bill down a bit.

Thanks for the replies, it's the torque I want for overtaking between 50 and 70 and going up some hills. I'm thinking I will look into a remap as well as my current Disco struggles up the hills near to me in Devon.
70 is pretty much as fast as I want to go towing and have always found the caravan pretty stable.

Are your tyres standard? On slightly larger tyres that standard my 300Tdi sometimes struggles to tow the caravan on hills, yesterday (Going from Penrith to Hawes) we dropped at one point to 35 on one hill ... but it was 14% .. ;)

I'd suggest stick to standard tyres sizes and 200/300 are OK, anything more and you would probably need some more torque so maybe a TD5, tweaked a tad or re-mapped, (relatively easy but can be costly) might be better.

Yep tyres are standard, I am looking at a TD5 auto next week which I certainly will get remapped.

Thanks goonarmy, however I don't consider 70 unsafe, my post talks about power/torque for overtaking. If idiots in cars and those towing caravans didnt sit at 50 to 55 in lane 1 on the motorway then I wouldn't have to overtake them.

I've had 200, 300 and TD5's - the best by far was the 200 but fitted with an R380 box and better ratio'd transfer box.

Whilst the TD5 is more torquey, i've actually not enjoyed it as much on long hauls (with and without trailers) and found the fuel bill to be slightly worse than the older TDI's.

Dont matter wot you consider. Old bill wont take that into account.

Get a pajero for towing caravans, My old 2.8 lwb would tow 18cwt vans and you'd hardly notice they were on the back :behindsofa:

I Tug a heavy twin axle Bessacarr with my 300Tdi man, no problems on motorways sits at a steady 55 up hill & down dale. Steep hills however do slow things down but I do tweak the pump to deliver slightly more fuel when towing. Still manage to pass lorries & a few caravans on occasion. Towing with an auto is easy, but you don't half pay for it at the pumps.

Do not get a Pjero if you intend to go to Spain in the future, pjero is a derogatory Spanish slang term. They are called Gallopers there (if memory serves).

Thanks for the replies. darrenm thats's good to know. I'm going to see an auto this Sunday.

I've just been reading about the VW Touareg 3.0 4x4 diesel as a tow car and it looks pretty awesome. MPG is good but maintenance seems a fair old bit and they don't have seven seats.

I think you'll find it's the idiots that don't observe the speed limit are the problem, the one's that think the law doesn't apply to them ;)
