So I noticed a leak of engine oil and it's bad enough that I need to get it seen to because I have to keep refilling. It seems to come from or above the oil filter (the sides of it are covered: the white "jar" the oil filter, right?) and from there it drips onto the front diff or the structural bits just behind the front diff (the anti-roll bar rod?) and then onto the floor. It's not that bad if the engine is off but once the engine is started, it's a steady drip. What should I be looking at?

make sure you have not got the old oil seal from the old filter still there. Some times the old o-ring will come off the old oil filter when changing and when ne oil filter is put on it will not sear properly and will leak. next look where the filter screw on to that might be lose also. but always remember to lube the o-ring of a new oil filter before installation, get it hand tight and then another 1/4 turn should be good. over tighten and you could deform the o-ring and have a leak, also it is a real bitch to get off on next oil change. They seam to get glued on as if magic if over tightened

i had a chance to clean under the car then started it up and I can see 2 thin streams of oil that appear to come from the 'neck' of the oil filter and run down the side of it. So I think you chaps are right. If I get a new one, ERR3340, I think it says on it (hard to read at that angle but Google thinks that's a Landy oil filter) does that come with all the sealing rings and gaskets I would need? Otherwise I don't know what those parts are called. I'll need a chain wrench too but Halfords have that for a fiver!

^+1 Good call!

How long would the filter last? I believe it has the original still, from date of manufacture N reg. Would that be credible?

Depends on mileage and type of use but I also change mine twice a year (use Magnatec).

Probably no need for a wrench and never use one to tighten.
I tighten & untighten mine by hand but get an excellent grip by wearing latex gloves, the grip these give is excellent. There is a chance you might need a wrench to remove the old filter but try it by hand first.

Have you check the oil return pipe above on top of the engine? Bet you it's perished. That's why it leaks when the engine is running. Only a few quid to get a new one and a ten minute job to replace it!
