Need a new Swivel hub kit - but which one ?

Got a nice dink in my front swivel..right on the lower seal. Had the seal replaced but the 'one-shot' still weeps a tad Sent an email to my local independant LR supplier as:
I have a 1989 Defender 90 that has been converted with a front non abs RANGE
ROVER CLASSIC axle.
I will be intending to replace the Swivel ball housing and would require a
swivel housing replacement kit for the Range Rover Classic axle.
Can you supply one of these full kits?

They replied:-
We would need to know the year of the axle, also the spines on the drive
shafts.

Fair do's, so I just need to prise off the end cap and count the spliines ( I didn't do the conversion ) but how do I date an axle ?

unless its early 6 bolt ball to axle fitment it will be frc7065 for the chrome ball ,rtc3429 for wheel bearings ,606666 x2 for swivel bearings

I had similar trouble with my 89 90, it has a 1993 110 CSW axle fitted and peeps were asking me for the reg before selling me anything

Not that many different swivels, I think its one of two types, early and late, correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks guys, appreciated, FRC7065 looks favourite at the moment I'll take the F/N/S wheel off and post a better photo, count the holes ( 6 or 7 by the looks of it - then it'll save me making a few (30 mins each way ) trips to swop over parts etc.) and I'm assuming series wheel bearings are the correct fitment and should these be replaced as a matter of course? Only the swivel is damaged, so thought a 'kit' may be better option with all the gaskets etc.

Incidently, ( I havn't looked yet ) where would the axle codes be stamped on the axle ( should be obvious I know ! )

Just an update before I take the plunge. I have a 24 spline driveshaft and the swivel is attached to the axle by 7 bolts. Large seal is 4625 6020 378. So it looks like you guys were right re FRC7065
Incidently, I see they use a fish scale to pull the hub when putting in the shims and it should be about 10lbs force....is there a way to do this without finding my local fishing shop ?

I see most suppliers stock, cough, Brit Part, without opening a can of worms, surely Brit Part can't get this wrong ( cough !!!! )

Wheel bearings are 100% fine.

Read all the previous threads. You may be lucky, you may not. It's a messy job, maybe slightly less so for you replacing the ball too, not something i'd want to do again, that said I ordered a kit and ended up being britpart (not the ball, didn't replace that). and touching wood has been ok so far....going forward though I always plan to avoid britpart where possible.

Wheel bearings are 100% fine.

it shouldnt be 10lbs ,that might be ok for top bush type but noy top bearing type 2-3 lbs is enough its also done before seal is secured ,you can do it by feel , you should just feel a slight increase in force required to turn it when top bolts are nipped up than when slack but should turn freely ,bottom pin never needs removing at all

Swivel is Brit Part, that's all they stock. Seals are Bearmach etc. So I'll be having a go at this tomorrow morning....so if you hear shouts of despair from the Wirral...tis only me !

I used some cheap luggage scales from Asda to set the preload

as james says above, you DON'T need to remove lower pin. I removed it and sheared bolt, caused unnecesary problems.

Well, thankyou gentlemen for the advice/guidance ( nice one re lower swivel being left in situ ) that you gave me...took 3 hours ( bastard caliper bolts were bloody tight ) but got there in the end. New top and bottom bearings in the new swivel plus new oil seal etc.
Wasn't to bad but with a gammy knee I'm now ready for a healthy dose of whisky

At least I'll get some monies back for the ( wrong ) top swivel and un-used lower swivel; spacers etc. Only thing that was wrong was the metal plate that goes behind the big swivel seal ( and the approriate gasket ) so used the exhisting plate and obviously didn't use the gasket.

Had to use an allen bolt on the top swivel as I 'lost' the correct bolt...only to find it submerged in the drained one-shot after I tidied up !!

OK..ordered a few more goodies to finish the front end off. Track rod/ends ( just standard ) as mine is bent from PO fun and games, plus 30mm wheel spacers ( as I have early disco wheels and 265 tyres fitted which just touch the chassis ( steering stop bolts adjusted fully out ).
Once all sorted..is there an easy way to check/confirm the tracking or is it a case of taking it to one of the reputable tyre/exhaust places ( and put up with the normal spouted ****e that I need new shock and discs etc ). I'll obviously set the new trackrod ends identical to the ones I remove

...oh and that defenderbits.co.uk is the nuts for bits ( Edit 8th July after waiting 5 days Defenderbits.co.uk then send me an email stating some goods out of stock and awaiting delivery etc..so, I retract my earlier recommendation. Obviously my Defender is now off the road!! )

I'm aware the spacers won't affect the tracking and will eat my wheel bearings within 20 feet of setting off

Took off the, erm, slightly distorted track rod ( also greased up wheel bearings etc )...but sadly, had to down tools as my goodies never arrived. Hopefully here on Monday

Britpart swivel seems to be holding up well with no leaks ( but I used Bearmach seals etc ).

.....after receiving this last Thursday PROCESSING - YOUR ORDER IS WITH OUR WAREHOUSE TEAM TO BE PICKED AND PACKED. So I went ahead and dismantled the Defender last week

Well, first (and probably the last time) using defenderbits.co.uk......now my Landy is offroad whilst they pull their finger out ( not just picking on this company but I could have acquired them last week but decided to try them as my local only had Britpart in stock and I didn't want to fit those. PLEASE, suppliers, don't advertise goods if they are not in stock )

Sorry, not good enough and NOT impressed !

No replies to my emails so called them today ( bugger, 5 minutes on their 0844 number ) but at least they are sending out the track rod kit...so it's a start )!

Still awaiting my bits from Defenderbits.co.uk ( only 10 days so far ) but hey ho once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
In the meantime got my nearby neighbour to weld up the front outrigger for me..very good job he made of it to !!

So lots of work thrown at the Defender this month...may even get a chance to drive her now :cool2:

Oh and those gay amber reflectors were only stuck on for the photee..now removed !!
