Check the connections to the sensor. Top R/H side of rad. Looking from front.

Also sensor faulty has been known

Think someone found that repairing a broken wire cured overheat message. The sensor seems to work in the opposite mode to that which is shown in RAVE. I.E open circuit HOT closed circuit NORMAL. Similar to the overheat switch in the EAS compressor. And not the other way round as depicted in RAVE. Just from memory so don't castigate me if that's wrong. :D:D

Think the case in question i mentioned was the transfer box showing overheat. But cure was repairing a broken wire. A broken wire should have showed temp normal according to the circuit in RAVE. So something is amiss in RAVE. The gearbox overheat is a similar circuit. Just a thought. Bridge the wires bet the message goes away.

were would i need to be looking for sensor ect im new to the range rovers.i have had a look at 2 pipes and oil cooler for sensor and cannot find 1. its also a dse 2.5 td 1997

Sensor should be fastened to the cooler with two short threaded screws. The connector to the loom is to the right hand side top of radiator (looking from front) clipped on rad mounting. Find that and follow the wire.

Stand in front of car follow top of radiator along to the right. There is a U shaped mounting the rad sits in. Power steering tank is bolted to it. Down in the U there should be a connector clipped to it. The wire from the sensor plugs into that. If you look at the link Fanatic posted there is a picture in that of the connector and it's location.

Must be down that side somewhere. Take the under tray off and have a look for it if it's down in the **** it may just be a bad connection.

Diagnostics. Or you could try disconnecting battery in proper manner and then reconnecting it. Loosen negative lead but don't take it off switch ignition on then off and disconnect battery with 17 seconds. Wait a while and connect it back up. Don't have keys in ignition with doors shut when you do it unless you want keys locking in car. See what you get after that.
