Welded rear diff

and possibly not need the winches so much, winches are for pussies that cant drive through in the first place, prevention is much better than cure

I think I'm gonna buy a torque biasing diff once I make some cash



Gotta set the new welder up so I can build a few motorbike frames for the local and get some cash

I have a Detroit locking diff and I feel it lock and unlock sometimes,

One of the guys at the local pay and play got annoyed is defender couldn't go where mine went even with bigger tyres, me t time I saw him he had done what wlm is on about as its just a pay and play toy for him, he said it feels like he's lost some power tho, no idea on that maybe its not lost power just gained loads more grip,
I mean welded the rear iff and a short shaft for road use

As for breaking shafts depends what shafts you have and how you drive,

My tyres are the best ive ever had but as we all know with the standard setup offroad at best you've got 2wd on opposite corners most of the time when stuck with the welded diff you get at least 3wd

Qs is can I live with the possibility of breaking shafts? More than breaking diffs?

opposite corners ?you can just as equally have just drive on one side

We've all seen how WLM drives

You'd loose power as the friction of the dragging wheels puts resistive force on the engine

which detroit do you have? is it the air locker or the auto tru-lock? i have the auto locking detroit locker and its a good bit of kit but can be a pain if not kept in good nick with plenty of clean oil and the like, mine is a bit noisy and clunky when locking and releasing the faster wheel, but off road I really cant fault it.

go to synthetic diff oil will work smoother/ less nosie. Water will fook them up as silt gets in there like lapping compound. Thats is what manufacturer says to use on mine

Surely you'll be putting a lot of stress on the one driveshaft when you're on the road...

my two pennies worth here.
back in the days, my weekend "toys" mostly had welded rear diffs that I welded ..
they mostly had high powered engines driving the pair of rear wheels either on dirt/gravel/cinders, or tarmac depending on track.
It was fun to drive If you could drive with the rear end hanging out on every corner.
(today its called drifting!!)
once I was told to try welding/locking up a diff in a mini I used to race !!!
on the same sort of surfaces as above...
one track in Kent (Isle of Sheppey/ raspberry park) was a pure dirt track, bumpy & rutted to fcuk..
I went out, broke a drive shaft, got the race car back to my pit area and had roughly 20 minuets to change the broken sheft for another, to get in the next qualifying race.
in my panic, I thought it was the nearside one that broke, so i changed It within the 20 mins...



I changed the wrong side In haste!!!!!

moral of story, never race a mini offroad with a locked.
but FFS! landrovers, If yer gonna brake a shaft or diff,
yer gonna break summit anyway.
go weld the diff, try the short shaft dodge (which I think Is a great Idea)
and have some fun fun fun in the mud.
when you get used to a locked rear diff, you can practice sideways driving accross a muddy field on "full power"

the only other way to get both rear wheels gripping/not single one spinning, is by fidle brakes - far too complicated in a landie..

I'm going for lockers and fiddles in the future when I move up a class fiddles arn't too hard to set up and in some situations better than lockers

I have the mechanical sort, locker in the rear and turtrac LSD front,

Yes I've noticed when the oil get a slight but of water in of mucky it becomes very clunky, cleaned it out fresh oil and was better but still mad a bang, drained the oil again and now smooth as carnt here a thing, I've got ep80/90 in mine millers, mineral transmission oil, same in the trutrac,

It got water in by the input bearing failing off road due to prop seizing,

Big ford F350 6.0 TD factory installed. Most 4x4's pickups come with locking diffs front and rear. Mine has lock out fronts and electric transfer cast 195K flawless. Had a GMC 2500 6.0 petrol 300K flawless manual transfer case with full time hubs

I had front n rear arbs in me rr and although there great I cant justify the cost at the moment..this is purely a toy that gets used as its supposed to get used it aint a shopping trolley or daily driver..

yes I break things and yes I use my front and rear winches every time we go out but I don't care I use and have a great time doing so..
I have a spare diff in the garage so looks like gonna give the welded diff a go

discos goin in Saturday for new cambelt and new clutch...so diff is on the bk burner for the mo..as I is skinter than a skint thing
