recentely done a test via the hawkeye and found ive also got to get the grey adaptor in order i can access the abs and security settings

well after plugging in the unit it came up basically the auto box ecu is faulty

ive cleared the fault and will see if it comes up again,

today whilst out the gears didnt seeem as smooth as they use to be, had another oil change and didnt make a difference

so by its nature of the ecu does it indeed tell the gearbox when and how to change the gears,

if i replaced the ecu do u think it would indeed i prove the gear selection or wouldnt make the slightest difference

my concern is now my freelander has done 177,000. miles am i possibly looking at a new gear box as i imagine i would be looking at least a grand,

also ive on occassion felt a slight knock on my left foot in the footwell whilst resting it out of the way in the far left hand corner and was wondering could this also be something contributing to the occassional rough gear change

really like my hippo and has been a great motor and would love to keep it as long as possible

thanks so much as always guys for all the help and really do appreciate it

Slow down. You've just cleared fault codes potentually from many years. Wait for a bit to see if they come back. If your auto is changing gear then the ECU isn't dead.

Buying a broken auto to work on... you'd be betterer to buy a working one thats been tested, if you want to replace it. But thats just my opinion.

hiya

sorry i took that bit out as i meant an engine but to be honest thats abit of a pipe dream and like u say need to slow down

petrified in a way of living on dla that i could end up with a large bill and not being able to fix it and just trying to ensure i can look after it the best i can, but know i just worry to much and just enjoy the hippo and stop worrying

going to give it a month to see if the fault comes back and as u quite rightly say to see how it goes,

its this knock as well and been going through the forum and seeing about mounts etc, maybe i could try to get someone to have a look underneath to see if any are worn etc

just trying to make sure a fault doesnt turn into a more seriuos one and see if i can do anything about it,

most appreciated and thks again

That makes more sense now. The Hawkeye will pick up fault codes from all the different computers. Some codes for wiring are: short circuit to ground, open circuit or intermittent. If a code pops up once then I think it stays there until cleared. I think it stays if the fault clears itself. So you may find all sorts of crap codes or possibly old ones which mean nothing now, as the fault was foxed previously. Make a note of them and clear them and see how it goes fter some miles. Having a diagnostic tool is great. But it can generate fear as well. My heap played up yersterday (see me auto problem fred) and the Hawkeye helped me understand the fault and I sort it myself. I just hope this is the case in the future. but you never know.

Hey just reading this thread and seeing the word Hawkeye mentioned, I take it this is a specific code reader/scanner for lr? What's the cheapest way to read my current freelander? I've a passat and u can download a program called vcds lite and buy a cable off fleabay that will then allow u to read ur cars electrical circuits. Cheers guys.

hiya

the code that came up was

1605 ,
faulty controller
eeprom

no other codes came up

noticed on the hawkeye it said

engine rough cyl 1 to 4 zero rpm , this was whilst the engine was on tickover

does that mean it hasnt got a faulty injector

sorry to ask daft questions

hiya, may i ask what year ur freelander is please , diesel , petrol etc

ive spent alot of time going through software and also bought software that claimed to work and didnt

this is my own opinion but would only have the hawkeye now and nothing else but thats my own view

I've had the eeprom warning in the past too. Not sure why but mine still works. You may find you sometimes struggle to get into the auto's computer. Try again and it then works ok. Well thats what happens to mine. My video of the auto's computer lists some of it's shortfalls. compare my video's with your results. I also have some of a Td4 with and without a synergy 2.

thks, mine came up with connection error etc and to restart the unit

will compare ur readings and will also get the grey adaptor i need as i wont connect into the security and abs setting without it

mine is version 5 and did have the synergybox turned on, as ron said even with the toggle switch on the middle setting the box is still techinally on,

thks again

I put up video's of what I had with version 4 and newer stuff with version 5. Still some more waiting to be edited and uploaded. v5 is the latest Hawkeye software. not sure if it will spot a faulty injector. Many just give a different reading for 1.

Hi, yeah I've got a 53 plate td4 sport 3 door manual.
Thanks
Paul

hiya , as its pre 2004 it not obd2 compliant, there is alot of software claiming to work and also not accurate and giving u false content

the hawkeye is the most accurate unit u can get

ive spent the last 2 years reading up on forums etc and everyone having mixed results and even though some units may start giving out readings i personally wouldnt trust anything else but a hawkeye

it can be updated as and when required and a very simple plug and play unit and has always got good feedback
