axle serial numbers

Has anyone got a list of idents. i have looked at my markings which are done with a dot punch. they could be a number of alternatives cause the marks are so close to the seam

i think the number is 71L28663A if that helps anyone tell tell me where the axle came from

I'm not sure what you're asking. The axles are standard to the model, with a few notable exceptions. So your D1 axle is the same as mine. Hope this helps.

Tnx for the reply. i bought the rolling chassis for spares to go on my ninety. The swivels need changing but the rest is good. i know around 1993 there were some changes. its just a case of knowing whats there.

The donor chassis is 24 spline at the diff end. thin drive flanges. the rear diff has 3 bolt prop flange.

My ninety is 1986 with 10 spline diff.

Its just when i come to renew the swivels and seals in the donor axels what to buy. i shall be swapping the hubs shafts and diffs over cause they are in good nick compared to mine.

Well, the main thing is you need to find out if yours have railko bush swivels or twin bearing.

10 and 24 spline disco had the same swivel ball apart from abs models that had the same swivel ball as the old railko bushed coilers.

Also the stub axles are shorter on 24 spline and thus the hubs are different, the bearings same, this was to do with fitting alloy wheels I believe.

Most things are interchangeable, but keep updated and I'll help with what's what.

I have got one of the hubs apart. It is twin bearing (top and bottom) and there is no ABS set up. I notice there is the straight notch across the wheel studs (some one else indicated that this was to designate that alloys can be fitted).

If its 24 spline then I'm pretty sure the swivel ball won't be the machined one that has a cutout where the shaft goes through it, you need the machining for 10 spline but not for 24 iirc.

What stage are you at? The other difference is the depth of the swivel ball seal, some are 8mm and some are 12mm

i have got to the stage that every thing on the rolling front axle is stripped out. the hubs are stripped down. i will check the swivel seal thickness. when i stripped the swivels down, they were full of one shot what a mess!

Yeah I have recently gone back to gear oil in the swivels tbh, new seals and balls means no leaks, and one shot is diabolically messy for when you have to make repairs so I thought sod it, gear oil it is.

One shot is good for road cars but mine is high maintenance low usage high breakage so gear oil suits better and is cheaper.
