Hi all, thinking about changing my engine for a v8 (currently 300tdi) just wondering the best way to go about it?

Do I just buy the engine or Buy a knackered truck for the engine and maybe use other bits. Could I get a classic rangerover and put that in? Just wondering of easiest cheapest way.

you porbably get a donor vehicle as cheap as engine on its own , luckily 300 sits forward like the v8 did so you can use just std lr parts ,gearbox would need converting to def gear stick rather than disco rrc style ,or convert you box (input shaft and bell housing )

Not thought that far. Had just been looking at other defenders but if disco is way to go I'd appreciate the advice

what are you after 3.5 carb /efi,3.9 efi ,defender v8s are usually low compression and so disappointing ,high compression is better and you can tell by looking near engine number which is stamped next to were dipstick enters block 9.35 is h/c 8.13 l/c,only say disco as they can be got cheap and are quite available defenders are much rarer and dearer

ha im doing the opposite, changing a 3.5 v8 to a 300tdi! if you want any parts let me know. i have a rangerover 3.5 v8 at the moment it was running on injection when i bought it, but then i put carbs on

Nice one bud. Will do would that drop right into a defender? Been looking at disco doner but not sure which model / year to get

we used an early disco v8 3.5 efi and replaced it with my carbs from the knackered engine, we didnt give much for our donor but the engine was strong and powerful anyway (typical discovery rot) carbs easier and cheaper option to put in the defender, we have SD1 inlet manifold and carbs but accelorator cable isnt right :/

like i say its on a running fender at the moment, so have complete exhaust, coil, dizzy, radiator, mountings the lot really

Part of me has to say why?

Don't get me wrong I love V8's, the RV8 in particular and V8's in general. But the hassle & cost vs gains over the 300Tdi are minimal for the most part. So what are you wanting to achieve by doing this?

Original factory V8's run the LT85 box, although an LT77/R380 should be fine.

I personally wouldn't go auto, as early auto's sap power, kill performance and ruin mpg. The lack of torque converter lockup in low 1st also means they have next to no engine braking off road.

they did run lt85 at one time as they did the lt95 but many ran the lt77 and r380
Lt95 was a 4 speeder found in earlier Range Rovers (and maybe the 101FC). Don't think it was ever in a 90/110 though. Although I honestly don't know what the Stage 1's ran.

All factory 3.5 V8 90's ran the LT85 as far as my knowledge extends. The only other UK V8 90 was the 50th Anni, but that was a 4 speed auto.

3.9 EFI NAS specs could be had with a manual, but I don't know which one. I would guess this might have been an R380.

lt 95 was fitted to stage one series and early defenders , there are many v8 lt77s and r380s ,60a is a lt77 uncooled 61a oil cooled likewise with r380s

You evidently know your stuff. Was the LT95 ever really fitted with the V8 though in a 90? I'm sure I've read very early 110's used the 4 speeder and I think the last of the 2.25's to use up supply.

I drive a C plate V8 90 on a regular basis, that has the LT85 in it.

Also could you clarify what 90/110's use the LT77 and R380 with the V8. Do you know what years and specs? Ta.

BTW - Disco's and RR's used the L77-s and R380 with the V8.
