OK I'm hiding this in here in case anyone thinks its about tyres

I have been searching and researching the tyres :D So today I happened to be parked next to a local tyre place so I asked for a quote for a couple of makes I might want.

They said I cant put bigger tyres on my steel wheels something about load and tubes. Is this correct, I didn't ask about the massive tyres, just going up a bit from 205/80/r16 to 235/85/r16

I have 235/85/16s on mine on standard rims, I thought LR offered that size as an option from new, Im sure my handbook has pressures in it for them.

which tyre place? if you really need some proper advice on them, pop down to otley, colemans tyres, he knows about landy tyres (and bigger) hes got a nice V8 disco too.
If you do pop down, call in next door and say hi!!

Thanks they did my last MOTs and I need to ask them about the Focus exhaust as I think its come off a bracket (two vehicles rattling like mad at the moment )

Which place next door, the garage or the electrical shop :D

235/85/16 is a big increase from standard.

What width are standard rims?

You do have to consider what width tyre to fit on a certain rim. All the garages i went to wouldnt put my 285/75/16's on my 7" rims. :(

Are you sure :confused: Its only 20mm wider and then another 5% on the middle bit the r16 bit is the same

I have done loads of searches and thought I had chosen a slightly bigger tyre

I found a thread on another forum which said the rims are 5.5 wide (probably inches ) and they need to be at least 6.

What I need is pictures to see what the sizes look like on Defenders. I fancy some with the white writing on the sides. Oh and they have to be good for laning :D

20mm is quite big for a tyre, remember its extra surface area on the tyre which will exert extra strain on the rim causing it to pop off.

a 235/85/16 is only just smaller than my 285/75/16 and there 33" tall!

white writing and good for laning! genius! :D standby, i know a site that will compare them for you. ill find the link. :)

85% of 235 is 199.75
75% of 285 is 213.75

So about 14mm smaller if I have got my head round this

So my current ones are 205/80 = 165

So the ones I chose would be 34.75mm bigger

Actually that is quite a lot

Marmadukes 225/75 would be 168.75 which is only 3.75 - not really enough to notice. If they are the biggest which will go on my wheels I am going to need bigger wheels anyway.

Hell this is complicated, even if you do the searches

I use discovery 1 steel wheels on mine they are a 7" wheel and I have 235/85 r16's fitted.you can get the cheap on eBay. Or paddocks sell new steel wheels from £30 + vat each

Thanks, I only asked at the tyre place as I was outside and wonder how much it would costs to change them. I was surprised when they said I cant without changing wheels.

I dont think I mind whether they are aggresive (do I have to do a search to find out what that means ) I want some to go laning and cause it looks funny on little wheels. Last time I was down at nrgservs place the opinion was 3 to 1 that the tyres were not big or good enough. Of course it probably doesn't matter that much until I get more practice driving off road
