Hi folks,
Got myself a new higher amp alternator to replace the old stock one on my 200tdi that was clearly struggling to keep up with the load, (especially with the AC running) and have been battling with it chewing up belts every other day. Currently, I'm averaging about 45km on every new alternator belt.
Someone even suggested that the load of the new alternator may be too much for that alternator and so I should consider installing a second alternator to share the load. (dont know if that's the best way to go though, because there is hardly any space left to do this).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Doesn't sound quite right, presume the alternator is free and the alignment is good. Worth checking though and check that it isn't catching on anything causing the initial damage.
 
yep sounds like alignment , its fairly common on the 300tdi when the pas pump pulley migrates forward out of the pump
 
Is it a standard motor fitment and a standard Landrover alternator, and the standard belt and it's not tightened within an inch of it's life?

I also agree with all that's said above about alignment ... ;)
 
I was aware it was a 200 , I was making a statement that it was not uncommon on a 300tdi for the reason given , thanks for the helpful suggestion tho !

200 has more than 1 belt,so don't get shirty when someone points out your on about a different set up.
 
ok guys..

previously i posted about my 200 standard alternator goinmg titsup a few months back,
was "still" charging but getting red hot under extreem load and just stretching the belt before your eyes.
the belt was a "good" ebay bargain, but was infact like the elastic in ya grannies knickers!!!
at the time I got by with another makers alternator that I cut the cast brackets to fit.
It was not an overly big output, but it worked infact it still works.
but I bought a new 200 DTi alternator & new landrover belt to fit "one day" soon..
in the meantime i tighten grannies knickers about once a fortnight,
but thats on a 55-60 amp output unit,
with no hoooooge lights, just 60/100 watt headlights through relays
(brillient headlights now)

So, our friend with sloppy belts,
were it a genuine belt?
were it in line through all the pulleys,
were it pulling its guts out with Blackpool Illuminations going on with just one poor little V belt.

if yes to all above, measure your weak belt/or take it to an engineers supplies shop for a decient engineering specification V belt,
as there made to work hard and not act like a virgin on a first date with a sailor :)
(and squeal-squeal-squeal)

So I went about checking the alignment, and as far as using the straight edge of a meter rule, it seems to be spot on. The alternator is a 100 amp Bosch unit as seen in some of the RR classics, and it bolted straight on to the seat without modification.
Been motoring around town for some time now with the AC off and so far, the last belt seems to be holding up... Back at home, I turned the AC and lights on as the truck sat in the yard idling, and the first thing I noticed after I turned the engine off was that, the temperature of the alternator belt was bordering on hot.... Could this problem really be related somehow to loading on that poor little belt?
With this new unit, I have never had to jump the car to get it started like I used to do on most mornings after driving nights with full electrical load (lights, AC, etc), so I would really like to do all that I can to get it to work...
Folks, any more suggestions??

The V belt is at its limits with a high output alternator, look into getting a high quality belt or going to a ribbed belt setup...
