Hi there,
I have an auto 53 Freelander TD4 with 78K on the clock.
Recently the transmission has developed some issues, from cold the car has no forward drive, engine just revs (reverse is ok) , however as soon as the car warms up this problem is resolved ?!
Also, as the box changes up, there is a momentary slip as it changes from 2nd to 3rd.
Transmission fluid is black, so something is not right !
Suggested solution, is a complete gearbox and torque convertor overhaul at mega money !
Any other suggestions ?

another box would seem the easiest or get yours repaired there is a common problem were a casting splits it pressures reduced and clutch or clutches burn out hence the blacl oil ,lack of drive till warm could be a sign of dirty oil effecting valve block ,give this guy a ring 01283 260051,hes good but ring a few other automatic transmission specialists too

Cheers JM, the number you gave appears to be his fax number, but google led me to the right place.

it sounds as though your seals have gone or the piston has gone in any case it will have to come off generaly the seals are ok and will work until the cold gets to them .where do you live

depending on how handy with spanners you are you can probably sort it in car , as you can get to all the bits you need from under n/.s front wheel arch . Automatic gearbox co can supply any parts , and I used them to assemble the 4/5 piston assy with new friction plates as well . but rebuilt the box myself , you will need to be methodical , clean and make a simple special tool to compress one piston and spring to get circlip in (basically a flat bar with 5 holes and two bolts thru to act as compressor) also make sure you get fluid level correct . do a search as there are several post by Hippo and james martin with excellent pics
