Hi all i have a 1999 p38 iam looking at getting a code reader/scanner , i have seen a lot on fleabay anyone any thoughts which one , dosent have to be on fleabay. :):)

Because most of the elecs on the p38 a bespoke you will need the correct one. Many people on here recommend the Nanocom Evo, and others use the bearmach Hawkeye.
HTH
:)

There ain't no cheap way of doing this. The Rangie was one of the first electronic cars so the protocols hadn't been fixed. Most of the stuff on fleabay may read the engine but that's it. To do a proper job, as Rod said, you want the Black Box Nano or the Hawkeye.

I found my eBay cheapo ODBII lead and software in the shed today whilst servicing my father-in-law's BMW. I plugged it in to both his and my car to see what happened.

It's one of those ODB to USB things, with a DVD of free software. Cost me about £20 I think.

Whilst it does a lovely job of reading, logging, and adjusting the systems on the BMW, all it really read on the RR was Lambda sensors and fuel trim, and engine RPM!

If you need just that, them a cheap one will do, if you need anything else (and you will in reality) then you need to get a Nanocom Evo or similar.

The Nanocom will do the entire P38 range but you have to pay for each module. So if you get it with diesel you will have to pay extra for the petrol modules. Check the Blackbox-Solutions website.

Nice thing with the Nanocom is it isn't locked to the vehicle VIN. So if you get it with the Diesel modules you can use it on any P38 diesel. Don't know about Hawkeye.
