Engine almost dies problem

Since I have had my Freelander (TD4) for about a year now, I find that if I almost stop at a junction then accelerate to move off, the engine seems to almost die before picking up unlike all my previous cars including diesels which just increased speed normally.

Is this a known problem with the TD4?

All tend to be a bit like that, new maf may help, but best way is to fit a Synergy 2, then notice the differerance, would not be with out it on mine

Mine goes like the proverbial 'sh*t off a shovel' - even with the Synergy switched off it sets off smartly.

Check the turbo hoses for leaks and/or splits and that the air-cleaner is not clogged up or damp.

MAF on the way out is a possibility too as booboodag suggests.

I have recently done the egr mod, the oil vortex mod and renewed the turbo filter. I have not had a chance to properly road test it yet. I will on Tuesday.

Air cleaner is still nice and clean from when I renewed it in August. I checked it when doing the oil vortex mod.

My problem seems to be when on the move, almost stopped at traffic lights and then accelerating when the lights go green before actually having stopped.

Doesn't seem to be there when moving off from a stationary position.

Does the synergy 2 bypass the maf sensor or do you have to have a working maf sensor to have the synergy 2?

My 06 Freelander has only done around 35K.

It does not bypass it, but ....

The Synergy 2a has the capability to boost a failing original Bosch MAF and a switch on the box to allow it to operate with the cheaper Pierburg MAF as a replacement for the Bosch, if the Bosch is completely shot.

from what i've read on these pages .. .. no

regarding :

the engine seems to almost die before picking up

the ecu takes note of both the go-pedal 'position' .. as well as ..
the 'rate' .. i.e. how fast the pedal is pushed down ..

i.e. try nudging the pedal down faster ..

the maf sensor will only allow so-much fuel to be injected in relationship to the amount of air it senses
.. if the rpm are below 1200 .. giving relatively low air-flow ..
the quantity of permitted fuel to be injected will be relatively low as well ..
( i.e. before the turbo .. when engine rpm are above 1200 .. really starts to boost the air-flow ) ..

obviously it will be related to what gear you've selected ( assuming it's a manual gear shift )
and what load is on the engine .. ( e.g. uphill ) .. as too how fast the rpm will rise ..
and therefore .. how fast .. and how much air (mass ) will flow over the maf sensor ..
( cold air has more mass .. so engine 'pick-up' might be quicker in cold temps )

I have had similar problems with my TD4.
When we had that spell of hot weather late summer,mine used to give symptoms of slight fuel starvation or even fouled plugs on a petrol car.
I cleaned the maf,tried it disconnected(no difference)
I was more or less resigned to try a new maf.

Then the weather turned cool and no more hesitation since.
I believe there is a temp sensor in the maf which I think may cause the problem,but at about £150 plus for a new one its a bit of a gamble.

With the cool weather we have had since august the Freebie has been running a treat.
By the way it never cut out but was just sluggish below 2500 rpm.

Oh! and does anybody else love the sound of the FBH coming on for the
first time come autumn or am I just sad.

My standard 54 TD4 is the same. I have learnt to "blip" the accelerator and build the revs a bit when pulling away and all is fine.
However, I do intend to ask for it to be checked at the next service.

That's exactly what I used to do as I thought the engine might die on me but it never did.

Since I did the EGR mod, it has been much better and I can only just notice a very slight dip in power.
