I've got a misfiring problem with my 98 reg 2 litre turbo diesel Landrover Freelander.
It randomly misfires, it's not constant. It picks and chooses when to do it which makes the problem 10 times worse to pin point. I can be driving for half an hour and no misfires what so ever. Next half hour it can be misfiring a lot etc

My first suspect was the fuel filter. Changed that along with my air filter but its still intermittently misfiring.

I think I've kind of narrowed it down. This particular engine (L series Diesel engine) only has one needle lift sensor going into injector 1. When I disconnect that it doesn't misfire at all but the loss in power to the engine is pretty bad. It becomes much slower. Now I'm wondering if all I need to do is replace injector 1 along with the needle sensor but I want to be sure because it'll cost me over 100 quid for a new one I think.

Anybody with any idea or input, it's appreciated.

I managed to fix it!!! :D A wee update on this for incase anyone comes across the same problem. I managed to source a used fuel injector 1 complete with needle lift sensor (Got the part plus next day delivery for £24 which I thought was very cheap!!!!!!) and swapped it out for mine. Drove around for 2 days now and it's not missed a beat once so must've been the needle lift sensor.

Happy days. :)

If I'd seen this before my first thought would have been a dodgy injector :). Well done for fixing it mate, the only reason there wasn't more input is because we almost never see any problem with this engine. They are so good!!

I have a similar problem but only on 'Full' (or almost) full throttle - at full speed (90) it feels like a missfire.

Today was my first time driving this properly on the road, got it legal this morning as another of our cars had an mot today and I didn't expect it to pass but it did :)

I am still running injector cleaner through the system (still on first tank of Diesel) but I dont think this cleaner is going to clear this problem as i just did 100 miles and the lumpyness was always at the same time. I did perform a proper Diesel purge when I was preparing this for the road..

I just wanted to chime in and say that another L series 2.0 diesel owner has the same problem.. And I did find this thread via a Google search.

big engine recondition service (ask your local garages or Google them and see who does one near you) also their indipendant fuel cleaner is way better than the off the shelf stuff, also with the additives less diesel more additive make it stronger mix than says on the packet ie x2 cleaners to 1/4 tank.

obv if it's a downed injector the service won't fix it but it's still worth doing for the extra up returned to the engine had mine done @86k ish it's like a new engine now pulls really well.
