My husband got 2 tyres put on the front of his freelander. Within a couple of miles the car was driving really badly. He phoned the tyre place and they said to bring it back. When he went to take it back the next day the engine exploded and oil everywhere. He phoned freelander garage and they said that this was caused because the tyre place put on tyres which were wrong size and that it has out pressure on IRD unit. The tyre place are saying this is not possible. Going to have to involve trading standards but has anyone heard of this. And please don' lecture me I now know we should change all the tyres but tyre place said there was no need for this and we took their word. Many thanks. Anne

you could try posting the query in the regular freelander section :
Land Rover Freelander - Land Rover Zone
this 'engine' section doesn't get read as much as the above link ..

( include make / type / size of tyres .. front and rear )

you Might get some flak ..
but someone will probably advise on how to fix-it as well :)

freelander_1's are sensitive to tyre selection / placement ..
( am assuming it's a freelander_1 you have ..
( you might want to include vehicle 'year' in posts
( as the freelander_2 has a completely different fwd system

for failed vcu's and ird's .. 'bell engineering' are highly recomended on LZ .. :
Symptoms - Bell Engineering
" IRD and/or VCU failure is also caused by miss matched tyre sizes between the front and rear axles. "

He phoned freelander garage and they said that this was caused because the tyre place put on tyres which were wrong size and that it has out pressure on IRD unit. The tyre place are saying this is not possible

i suspect the tyre place gave you the wrong information ..

With Freelanders don't new tyres have to go on the rear with part-worn rears moved to the front otherwise it damages the VCU/IRD?
