Oil leak rear drivers side wheel

On my new 2002 P38 DHSE, the only oil leak I seem to have is from the rear drivers side wheel. It is transmission oil (or rather, it smells like gear oil and is reddy-brown) but it's actually running down the inside of the alloy. The axle and diff are clean, but both rear wheels are oiled up and the drivers side one has a drip.

Any ideas? Brake fluid? an axle seal somewhere? Cheap fix? Serious?

Reddy brown sounds like brake fluid to me. EP is more yellow in colour than reddy brown

Just had it up on the ramp at work (I'm lucky enough to work at a college that has a motor vehicles dept which I may need!)

Anyway, it is transmission fluid and the various tutors that looked at it said it was the half shaft seal. The oil level is down by about 2cm but they said "don't worry, just keep an eye on it, check it once a week and keep it topped up until you can get it fixed". They don't know the P38 so don't know if its an easy job or not.

The parts are less than a fiver, can I do it myself with access to a ramp or does it need any specialist tools? The tutors said on some cars its a few minutes of a job and something a DIYer can undertake but to be careful of the brake assembly.

Any ideas? Kwik Fit? (OK, maybe not.) But I do have a very good Arnold Clark nearby?

What oil do I need to get from Halfords? It's cheap there, I have a trade card. I'm at work so can't check RAVE. Someone told me EP90? Is that right?

That's fine get 3 litre think it takes 2.7 or 1.7 can't remember

75W90 is the recommended, 75W80 is also OK

It's the modern replacement for EP90, even supermarkets stock it over here, can't imagine that Halfrauds don't have it, although on reflection they are pretty useless

You know what, I have to defend them and give them credit where it's due. Sometimes the staff can be clueless and I've had run-in's with the Wigan branch where you order something and then they don't have it in when you turn up. But both the Warrington and St Helens branches are excellent. Good customer service and the prices are great with a trade card. Bulbs for a few pence. £50 off the price of a heavy duty battery etc. Their tools are good too...

Anyway, thanks all. I'll pop in - and now, after saying all that above, probably find they don't have any!!!
