Hi all!

I'm new here, but have used this site many-a-time for help and advice. Unfortunately have an issue that has got me stumped.

Mines a 2005 Td4 SE, 68k, and since driving through some standing water last week, (not that deep), its making a new noise...

I have been doing a few of the searches on various forums, and i am starting to worry that ££££ will be on the horizon!

It sounds like it is coming from the front passenger side, a constant metallic droning, not when idling, but starts from pulling away, up to 30/40mph when it fades slightly. the only time it stops is when cornering with a little speed and sharply.

My first thought was wheel or VCU bearing, but on reading some posts started to worry about the VCU itself. I know that Landy updated the drivetrain, and this issue is less prevalent on the facelift - but does it still occur?

I don't get any knocking or banging on steering from the IRD, she drives lovely, and I have tried this evening pulling away in reverse on lock, and she doesn't feel tight at all. The IRD was however hot-to-touch this evening after the drive back from work, roughly 5 miles, not more than 40mph.

I have worn scorpions on the front, and brand new General UHP's on the back. The clutch/flywheel was done in May and IRD fluids replaced.

It's being looked at on Friday at a friend's garage, so I guess I'm hoping someone could allieviate the worry!

Thank you in advance

Andy

Can't see it being the VCU as its a sealed unit, more likely the front VCU support bearing. Try dropping the rear drive Train off and check if the noise has gone, if it has then its almost certainly one of the support bearings.

Cheers Nickcc, I've have seen about the bearings, one of the things i'm pinning me hopes on as they are cheap - out of interest, should they get warm? The front bearing is warmer than the rear, which had me thinking that was the cause initially.

My worry is that the VCU has gone and seized itself, which will be difficult to explain to the wife after the £960 clutch and flywheel bill.....

Just checked tyre pressures, which were low at the back, but alas made no change.....

If the front one is warm it may indicate that it's not moving as freely as it should, perhaps it's worn out - that wouldb be a prime suspect for the noise :).

The bearings are about £30 ish a pair including the rubber surround. Don't buy cheapo eBay replacements as they will fail in next to no time. The VCU doesn't seize just becomes harder to slip due to change in viscosity, loads of info on how to check but Hippo's seems the most informative. Bell and other suppliers reckon 70,000 miles is about the max you can expect before you risk damaging the IRD or Diff, mine had done well over 100,000 miles before I replaced and then only because all the scare stories had made me mistrust the VCU. A recon VCU from Bell will cost you £270 including delivery and new bearings or bell will change it for you if you live near enough. Other suppliers are known to supply dodgy recon units especially off eBay, take care.

Thanks for the reply wljayne, hopefully it is something as simple as that, seemed a coincidence it started shortly after getting its feet wet. And I thought the doors were meant to fall off!!! - that I can cope with, not a noise I cannot find....

I think I have googled too much and paranoia is starting to creep in!

Paranoia is good. Guess you'll be getting another pair of UHP's for the front then ;)?

Out of interest, with the life of the VCU as mine is just shy of 70k, does that apply to the facelifts too? One of the threads I read was that as Landy changed the ratios (rear diff??) it prolonged them. This was something i mentioned to Landy when I took her into the dealers at Matford Exeter as I had an oil leak from the IRD, which turned out to be a split copper washer on the IRD oil filler - I asked about a VCU change, as I had around 65k on the clock and was told it would not need replacing for some time. Unless they told me that as I still had a warranty!

LOL, yep, I expect the UHP's will be on the list soon. the front scorps haven't got long left!

If you're at 70k I'd get it checked. Most garages won't know their arsehole from their elbow so take it to a specialist like Bell if you can.

If you have the new ones on the back then you're probably ok but generally speaking the rule is replace them all at the same time and have all the same make and model. If you do have newer ones put 'em on the back. There are some links in my signature which will help you here :).

I've seen about the tyre diameters - Landy kindly put brand new tyres one the front, leaving the nearly worns on the rear when i bought her back in 2010. I had no idea of the problems that causes till i came across this place!

Read a thread recently about someones inner wheel arch cover being detached after driving through water and rubbing the wheel. Cant see it making a metalic noise but worth a look.
