Iam making me one of those today.
Coffee jar and a couple of lengths of 8mil
Copper tube me thinks with some gauge tube
Sweet.
Yup, manual gearbox on mine.... so different fluids!

As I said early all auto manuel and transfer box have the same oil don't know what you been putting in it![]()
Well it is a disco after all thought this was range rovers thread
My copy of RAVE for 2000 model year states MTF 94 for the manual gearbox, and ATF Dexron III for the transfer box. Not sure where the above scan is from....
Having said that, anybody got any idea what spec MTF 94 is??
Cheers
Jerry
ps I haven't put anything in it yet...... but am keen to top it up before a long journey this coming weekend
Scan from drivers handbook, it's fitted with an r380 gearbox, in my defender that has same gearbox it was ATF tooMy copy of RAVE for 2000 model year states MTF 94 for the manual gearbox, and ATF Dexron III for the transfer box. Not sure where the above scan is from....

Any ATF will be fine in the transfer box - not much in there to care about what oil it's running in.
A fully synth 80/90W GL4 fluid will be closest to MTF94, but MTF94 is widely available from car-lube (MTF-94) and Morris Lubricants (Lodexol MTF) - why not use the right stuff? Preferably the latter to support a British company!
ATF was the oil used in r380 gearboxes for years it got upgraded to mtf 94 semi synthetic , aperntly better gear changes and ran cooler but at a cost the choice is yours .Getting Dexron III ATF not a problem but right now all I have available to put in the gearbox is either the Dexron III or GL-5 gearbox/diff oil. Reading this thread (and others around the net!) I am confused about which would be better to top up the gearbox, I will do a full gearbox oil change using Lodexol MTF when I get back from next weekend's trip.
So, what do you think I should do?
- leave it until I have exactly the right oil. It's been fine until now, another 2,000 miles won't matter
- see how far below the filler it is and if necessary top it up with GL-5 compliant oil
- see how far below the filler it is and if necessary top it up with Dexron III compliant ATF

Jerry
The plot thickens (no pun intended!).... just drained the transfer box and what came out is more like gear oil than ATF, i.e. brown not red and thicker/smelly like gear oil always is.... I will replace with the correct ATF of course, but could somebody have tried to mask a problem in the past by putting gear oil into the transfer box rather than ATF? There is a slight leak from the transfer box somewhere, perhaps the thicker oil slowed down the leak??
Any thoughts gratefully received...

Red and thin n runnycould be the black sludge of doom
ATF oil should always come out still red (not saying clean) but still red, when it's black it's a sure sign your gearbox is on its last legs!
I would suspect from your description that it's just been filled with the wrong stuff
Remember i am talking about the transfer box not main gearbox...
It's not black or sludgy, still clear in fact. Looks like the GL-5 compliant stuff I put in the diffs.
Good idea re the drain down and refill.
Back to the original point of this thread - yet again i am indebted to Datatek, bought two cheap garden sprayers yesterday 11 each and the approach worked superbly for refilling the transfer box. Saved loads of time and mess. Still managed to make a mess of the drive though as usual, forgot to take the vent plug out of the oil drain catch container......
