Went to pick up a heavy CRT monitor last night and noticed how much nicer the landy drives with an extra hundred weight in the boot. So, think it's time that the spare wheel got relegated from the bonnet to the back and improve the balance...I'll keep the bonnet one for expeditions though.

I don't want to store it in the back cos with the roll bar and all the spares and tools I carry there wouldn't be a lot of room left for the shopping or passengers - not that anyone would be daft enough to sit in the back...

I've got a tailgate, so what are the options?

New ones look frigging pricey! Will one for a 90/110 be bodgeable?

Anyone know of any plans for one to fit a series? I've had a poke round on the net but not much in the way of measurements....I've got plenty of scrap iron and a welder?

Anyone got a beat up one they'd like to sell?

Any other ideas?

D

Yes, I think I'll be making something along those lines but that one fixes to the top of the tub - which would interfere with the tilt tie-downs so I'd have to have a different bracket arrangement. I'd quite like it to use the same catch as the tailgate which will mean fabricating a different lock bracket for that too...

Now I need to look at for a nice set of bearings like on that picture...

I would imagine if you took a picture of what you were after and took it into a bearing suppliers/stockists(google for one in your area) or even a motor spares place they would sort something out for you. They probably handle enough to have a good idea what would best suit the job.
A bit of decent sized box section and a bit of flat plate and your away.

They are pretty easy to make, once you know what you want, and you've rooted out all the bits of scrap lying around. I made this one from the frame of a water pump and the carrier plate off the rear door..:D

What did you use for the hinges, how does it attach to the rear door? - nice looking!

Ooooh, that would be telling.........

I made the hinges from crap lying around (I have a lathe), and I attached it to the door with doo dad, the bit that holds up the tail gate, I can't think of the name of it, bugger...:D
