Right - I,ve changed my steering box, lower U/j all 3 TRE's and the drop arm ball joint.

centred box by removing drag link and two full turns to left then two full turns to right and maybe just a bit to get steering wheel straight.

Ratchet strapped steering wheel to drivers chair to stop it moving and did tracking using string.

Fantastic - steering is straight with no veer - what a good job well done untill I did a few turns.

Rubbing on n/s radius arm

got under neath and adjusted to find that full lock to right is crap and is about 3 inches away from radius arm let alone the 20mm- #
but that is not restricted by the lock stop bolts ???????????????
please explain - what have I done wrong???????????

With the wheels straight ahead is the steering arm from the box also pointing straight ahead?have you changed the length of the steering rod?to long or to short will give the symptoms you describe.

Hi and thanks for your reply.
When I bought the vehicle the wheel was 45 degrees to the right to go straight.
So I did as above to rectify the 100 degree play in the steering wheel.
I've just been out and counted and it is exactly two full turns left to full lock but only one and a half to the right.
I.ve just remembered that I did centralise by turning left then two right then I slipped off the uj and reconnected to make the steering wheel straight at centre.

I would have changed the length of the drag link as I replaced the tre's. The tracking was well out when I bought it.
Is it supposed to be one and three quarter turns to centralise so that I get one and three quarter turns lock each way ?

Confused

Put steering arm straight ahead then shorten or lengthen the steering rod to get wheels straight, remove steering wheel and replace in position you want.CHEERS.

to set steering you center box ,it has approx 3 and 3/4 turns lock to lock ,then center steering wheel either by removing it and refitting (watching out to get indicator cancel mechanism right )or by undoing ujs on steering linkage and refitting center ,then adjust drag link to get wheels straight when steering wheel is

Got underneath and looked and the drop arm seems to be slightly pointing to o/s. So what you are saying is that the land rover repair manual is wrong and rather than two turns I need to halve what i thought was 3.5 turns lock to lock, then full lock left and 1 and three quarters(half the total lock to lock) back and that is centre.
then adjust wheels with drag link and centre steering wheel with u/j's
?????

yes there isnt 4 turns ,set steering wheel first at that point then road wheels to steering wheel

Right - Got it.

Why oh why does the manual say that two turns is centre then - did they change something or just get it wrong ??

Typical Land Rover hey!!!

I'll try and get it done today but I've got welding on my transit to get done as it is listed on ebay plus I've got work to do in tonbridge wells next week so I've got to pack the camping stove and stuff - first time sleeping in the defender????

Cheers James and all who helped
I'll post back here when done to let you know how I get on.
