New Tyres

Guys,

Misses Freelander needs tyres so I searched around and picked 4X Rockstone F105 235/50 R18 W (97), Reinforced tyres but all the spec says they are for a car.

Will these be ok, she does not go off road only road driving.

It's not that they say they are for a car that would bother me - it's the fact they are cr*p that would be a worry.

If you intend selling the car soon (or disposing of the missus a la Midsomer Murders) then they will be fine.

But if you want to drive round corners in the wet and come out the other side facing in the correct direction - don't bother!

There are not many reviews of these tyres, because anyone interested in anything except the price, haven't bought them.

The only reviews there are, are pretty conclusive - they are rubbish. One guy even said he wouldn't wish them on his worst enemy.

Road tyres are fine for Freelanders - no problem at all - off-road has nothing to do with it - but if you value your safety - get some decent ones.

Further to the above I have calcelled the order for the above cheap tyres and purchased 4X Hankook Dynapro HP RA23 instead.

Are the Hankook Dynapro HP RA23 tyres any good?

You REALLY REALLY should spend a few minutes on google searching for how good/bad the tyres are.

Those tyres get a mixed review as well with one comment about sudden understeer going round roundabouts.

The Pirelli Scorpion ATR gets a much better review for grip, noise and wear rates, they will likely be dearer but let's be frank here.
That tyre is all that holds you to the road, why compromise on buying ****e tyres for something so important.

pirelli scorpion are considered one of the better tyres to go for. Do a search on here!
I am sure scorpions were fitted as standard or am i wrong?

I've heard good things about the Conti Cross Contact LX for road use. I'm saving for some BFG or Generals to play with off road.

The reviews i read were all 4x4 owners, one guy got 85k out of his tyres..

I've seen a few sports with them fitted. They had no issues in the deep snow from a couple of years ago. This company will happily sell you substandard tyres, but steer you away from tyres that are suitable...

That company knows 'diddly-squat' about tyres for 4X4s.

The Scorpions are a damn good tyre for the Freelander - and it did come on some as the OE.

The Conti LXs as mentioned by WLJ are pretty good too. In fact any of the less aggressive Conti 4X4s would be good for a road-based Freelander.

I run the Conti 4X4 contacts as my winter tyres (although they are officially an all-season tyre) and are M+S rated. Very quiet and can handle light off-road too. Lots of sipes so they're good in the wet.

Summertime I'm on a high-performance car road tyre.

Don't skimp on tyres - they are what keep you between the ditches - rather than in one!

Don't forget Goodyear either......... although not mentioned on here a lot, I have them fitted to my '01 FL, and have no complaints at all. I think wear is the only issue, but as I don't do a great deal of mileage, I'm not too worried. And also I don't do offroad either, so they are ideal, as well as being value for money

Whats the best tyre?

I could go through most on your list with comments - like I drove to Greece and back on Bridgestone Turanzas and somehow there was 3mm less when I got back!

To cut a long story short you probably wont do much better than the Continentals. Braking and cornering is exceptional and they last well.

I've done 28K with mine already and they should see 50K.

I'd buy them again.

I dont think that split is the fault of the tyre or how it was made and does not make it a crap make.
