i think its a good idea but vitally flawed and surley you would still have it done every other year as a precaution so you can at least have a nose around and find any problem areas of rust etc worn parts that might be coming to scrap it completly not thebest of ideas but every few years now there is an idea

Wonder how many barn finds will go straight onto the roads. There will be a demand for pre 1960 registration plates now, a few Defenders will be tax and MOT free on Series 1 plates no doubt.

I think I'm right in saying that in Belgium (and maybe other euro countries too) this has been around for some time. And newer vehicles than 1960s too.

Indeed showmans vehicles (HGVs atleast) are MOT exempt, and they're just a bunch of pikeys with fairground rides.

*may have sort of worked on the fair when I was 16/17*

doesnt really change anything , as it still has to be in roadworthy condition if stopped by police or vosa !!

wtf  its a joke . i work on classic jaguars for a living, and some of the **** that we get in with a mot, is unreal. mk2 and e types rot like no tomorrow, alot shouldnt even be on the road. along with fooked track rod ends and steering parts that aint been changed in the last 60 year, pure death traps.... i have had to restore cars that pepole have paid 30 grand for that are held together with sealer , newspaper , and bodyfiller..

If I remember correctly from the MOT seminar this is not going to be law just yet, they are still looking into all aspects of it. There were 2 reasons given to me as to why they are doing this, 1 was the limited number of pre 60's cars on the road (10,000 or so) and also the fact that pre-60's cars have a very basic MOT (no seatbelts, basic lights and braking e.t.c.).

It does seem a bit silly but there really isnt many pre 60's vehicles, 60's+ cars are all over the place but post war vehicles are pretty rare. Also insurance companies will be asking for a safety inspection as far as I am aware so it wont be a case of no checks are carried out, just not an MOT...

Someone mentioned the police as well, they couldn't stop pre 60's vehicles without an MOT as it wont be illegal, they can only follow the law...

Might end up like france or germany where mot exempts have use conditions ie time ,amount of use, type of use, night use etc etc.
