Disco won't start

Went to start her up just got a clicking noise, tried jump leads nothing, eventually got her started by towing her and bump starting, drove home, parked up went to start her, nothing but the clicking noise, now when you turn the ignition there is a beeping noise and what looks like a crossed out B flashing in the LCD display were the mileage is displayed, any ideas?

Cos the battery is fooked  try disconnecting the battery and just attach the jump leads direct to the battery cables or better still get a known good battery and swap it over.

If you put jump leads on a battery in a car where the battery is flat, there still likely won't be enough of a kick to start the car. Especially with a dirty big lump of a diesel motor like a Disco's. Either change the battery or leave the leads attached and the donor car running for a bit, then ensure there is someone in the donor car giving it some revs when you try and start the Disco.

If the starter motor isn't working you'd think it'd be either the battery or the starter motor. If there are funny things happening on the dash, such as crossed out "B" appearing, then you've got to think.........um what can "B" stand for? Elementary my dear Watson, (lights pipe).

I appreciate the advice Sarcasm not withstanding, but it appears you may be wrong the battery is fine, its the alternator that's packed up.

Duff alternator won't stop a landy from starting. Totally flat battery will, of course the duff alt won't be charging th battery. So at some point even a brand new battery will run flat. Have you had the Alt tested? What voltage is it putting out? If it's just the voltage regulator or bushes that are goosed A repair is almost always cheaper than a replacement.

Aha, so the battery was only a symptom. Sarcasm duly withdrawn and replaced with an olive branch.

Dropped a brand new battery in yesterday, drove about 40 miles to Belfast international airport on the way back started to lose all electrics, lights went, wipers went ( which considering it was raining was a pain) warning lights come on (think it was the 3 amigos but not 100%) but even they went out when the dials stopped working, eventually even my head lights died and then the car started stalling, twice she died twice I managed to get her started by rolling hill starts limped home with no electrics what so ever and cars flashing me to turn the head lights on, lucky enough managed To avoid plod, managed to get a new alternator for £80 of eBay, could get it cheaper but this one comes with 90 day guaranty

Olive branch accepted, I am noob to land rovers so still alot to learn so all advice greatly appreciated.

its called the discovery because every week you will discover somthing else wrong with it this time sounds like starter motor or low battery .

just went through similar with mine
it was the alternator that killed the battery and blew starter fuseable link in the engine bay
the battery was a tight fit in the tray there seems to be a slight change in the shape of the battery so a little weight on it and it fits
the alternator was actually easy once I made a tool to hold the viscous fan and thinned down a cheap 36mm spanner and then eventually found the hex bolt that holds the alternator at the bottom
on turning the key I had a single click noise this was the sound from the relay in the fuse box under the dash but no starting
then I saw people were looking at the BCU etc so I looked at the rave diagrams for starting and followed the simple route
the signal goes from the first relay to the engine fuse box the relay made a small click so all was working to there but still no starter after the relay the next point is the fuse link one of the square ones
take it out and test with a ohm meter or swap for the lighting one
my starter then worked
if yours does not and the fuse was ok you need to check the connections to the starter and then the starter itself

I still have several leaks to find
only just started but I will say I just removed the roof lining it took about 20 minutes on my own and now the sun roofs look a little less scary but the water on the front passenger fire wall worries me
