After reading this post which is very interesting, i have become a little confused, we bought a freelander TD4 gs 51 plate on 110miles on clock yesterday we decided to see what it was like and drove down to Paignton, we stopped in tesco filled up roughly 48 litres, drove 110 miles to paignton, drove about 30 miles while there and 110 miles back before the light come on, so in total about 250 miles on 48 litres mean i have an average of only 22mpg? please correct me if i am wrong, any one else simular?

If you want more mpg (and less smoke on acceleration) - here are some easy cheap suggestions.
Stop using the supermarket diesel. Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate, Total Excellium or similar gives more mpg.
Clean and disconnect the EGR - or better still fit a by-pass. £45
Replace the pcv with the BMW up-dated part. £23
Use a bottle of Millers injector cleaner once only. £6
Add 250ml of Tesco or Halfords cheapest mineral base, low-ash 2-stroke oil per full tankful. £1
More mods / changes than these, eg a tuning box will cost a good bit more.
Lots of people have improved their mpg from what you quote to the mid 30s, with the above simple improvements.
Motorway running in top gear should give 40+
All depending on how heavy your right foot is of course.

Thank-you very much, extemelly helpful, must admit, i know nothing about landys, after owning vags since i passed my test, will go out and get those bits and bobs tomorrow, a good 90 miles was on the motorway with slightly mixed driving obviously trying it out but mainly at 70, which is why i was getting worried everytime i looked at the needle it had moved ALOT, but have had no smoke out exhaust as yet!! thanks again much appriciated!!

BMW Part Nr: B11.12.7.799.367 Oil Separator £23.35 inc VAT
It comes complete with all the gaskets and 'O' Ring.
This is the clever interior cyclone vortex part only as you don't need to replace the cover - just give it a rinse in some type of cleaner / white spirits.

i do not count how many miles I can do to the gallon with a roofrack on as long as the car and big lights on the top you can not expect to much

My 'aerodynamic' roof-box costs me only 2mpg which is less than I expected.

That’s normal driving for me v6. Best I ever got was around 28mpg at a steady 60mpg on motorway whilst feathering it. Did this for a week while filling up each day with about 40L. I normally drive residential and A roads. Average is 18mpg but dropped to 16.5 when I got me Grabber AT2's.

Just to recap - I've had my FL coming up to 11 years. My mileage has been around 34/36 mpg for years. In December I did ALL the mods and said I'll get back with my NEW mileage rate. And here it is and I'm pretty chuffed to be honest - a massive 42 mpg (mixed mileage) just been using Tesco cheap cheap

That's good to hear MJB as it confirms that we are on the right lines and it's not all smoke and mirrors as some folks think.
I'm aware of the psychology that says if you've spent time and money doing something - you want it be right - to prove to yourself that it was not a wasted exercise. You tend to get the results you want to find.
Like you I'm chuffed that it's all been worthwhile.
Now I think I've done everything and wondering if there is anything else.
Some folks have been talking about filling the tyres with Nitrogen????
Might have some of that when I change to summer tyres.

Mix of daily short runs and a couple of longer mway jaunts with a 50 mile tow of a 4 wheel 1000kg trailer.
Undecided if it's good or bad ?
I have an alisport EGR kit and new synergy sat here waiting for me to fit...

Hi,
I would say that's pretty much normal for a factory standard TD4.
Fit all the bits - don't forget the pcv as well, and then compare - it'll be interesting to see your results.
I now get much better mpg than that with my auto.
